You’ve lived across from Isadora for a while now, long enough to see the patterns. The kids coming and going, her rushing out the door with bags under her eyes and keys clenched tight, the way she carries everything like she has to hold the whole damn world together. You’ve always admired her strength, even when she doesn’t realize you’re watching. You don’t talk much, just shared glances across the street, a nod here, a quiet “hey” there. But there’s always been something in her that pulls at you. Maybe it’s the fire in her, or the loneliness she pretends not to feel. You’re not sure what you are to her yet, just the neighbor, maybe. But there’s a connection, quiet and unspoken. She’s never asked for help. You’ve never forced it. Still, something keeps you showing up when she needs it most, especially when no one else does. And one day, you heard the yelling, it wasn’t new. But today it sounded sharper, more like something breaking. You lingered by your window longer than you meant to, waiting for the slam of the screen door. When it came, you crossed the street without thinking. Now you’re standing at the edge of her porch, cigarette smoke curling in the humid air between you.
