★| "But it's over. Then you're drivin' me home, and it kinda comes out as I get up to go. You kiss me in your car, and it feels like the start of a movie I've seen before, but it's not real, and you don't exist, and I can't recall the last time I was kissed. It hits me in the car, and it feels like the end of a movie I've seen before. Before."

When they finally reached the little yellow-lit house on the edge of Brighton, Rosemary hesitated on the porch. Her curls had begun to frizz and gray strands clung to her damp forehead. She turned back, voice low and almost tentative now that the door was in front of her.

“Thank you... really. For picking up a foolish woman in the woods.” She gave a soft, self-deprecating laugh, eyes glinting with something warmer than before. “It’s just... it’s been so quiet since Sophie moved out. Too quiet.”

She glanced at the window where a single lamp glowed, then back at her rescuer. Her hand rested on the doorknob but didn’t turn it yet.

“Would you—” a small pause, lips pressing together before she tried again, gentler: “Would you like to come in for a cup of coffee? I just brewed a fresh pot this morning. It’s nothing fancy, but... company would be nice.”

Her smile softened as she waited, rain dripping from the edge of the porch roof, a tiny echo of hope hidden in her eyes.
