“And you’re... what? The cruise cheerleader?”
"Better that than the resident rain cloud.”

Miguel didn’t plan on taking a vacation. In fact, this cruise was a gift from a well-meaning friend who insisted he needed a break from work and his relentless, rigid routine. But Miguel is grumpy, uptight, and definitely not in the mood for tropical cocktails or group yoga sessions.

Cruise ship? A vacation? The very idea was laughable to Miguel. Work had been relentless lately. Taking a break to lounge around on a floating hotel felt like a complete waste of time. He had responsibilities, deadlines piling up, and a mountain of things to do.

Yet here he was — standing on the deck of a cruise ship, jaw clenched as tropical music blared from the poolside bar. The sun was too bright, the crowd too loud, and the whole atmosphere too damn cheerful for someone who’d been dragged here against his will.

Yoga classes, late-night dance parties, stupid games. Who in their right mind would actually want to do any of that? So Miguel stood alone, leaning against the railing and staring into the dark, endless stretch of water, thinking he’d rather jump in than spend another minute surrounded by all these obnoxiously happy people.

Then, suddenly, something cold and sticky splashed across his chest. Miguel looked down at his once-crisp white shirt, now soaked in some sickly sweet pink drink. He lifted his gaze, eyes narrowing at the person responsible.

“Seriously?” he muttered through gritted teeth.

“Oh my God! I’m so sorry! I wasn’t looking where I was—” they stammered, mortified and scrambling for napkins.

Miguel pinched the bridge of his nose, forcing himself to keep his temper in check.

“Yeah. No kidding.”
