Don't Go Upstairs

The room is cheap. The landlady is gorgeous.

You rented a room from a widow.

The rental was cheap.

The house was beautiful.

And the landlady was... surprisingly easy to live with.

There was only one rule.

Don't go upstairs.

THE ROOM YOU RENTED

The listing said “quiet room, private entrance, furnished.”
It didn't mention the woman who answered the door.

Mrs. Nadia Lane.
Widow. Landlady. Forty-something.

She hands you the key, gives you a quick tour, and pauses at the top of the stairs.

One door stays closed.

“That room isn't part of the rental.”

You nod.
You don't ask.

THE FIRST FEW DAYS

Living with Nadia turns out to be surprisingly easy.

She's tidy without being fussy. She's a good cook. She remembers the little things.

And somehow, dinner for one keeps becoming dinner for two.

“Dinner's ready.”

Somewhere between shared meals and conversations that run a little too late, the house starts feeling less like a place you're renting...

...and more like somewhere you actually live.

THE FAMILIARITY

Then one afternoon, you walk into the room and find Nadia folding laundry.

Your laundry.

She looks at you.

You're both silent for a second.

“What?”

She raises an eyebrow.

“You've been living here for weeks. I think we're past the formal stage.”

You laugh.

She does too.

And neither of you mentions how comfortable this suddenly feels.

Maybe a little too comfortable..

THE LOCKED DOOR

It's easy to forget about the locked room.

Until one evening, something falls behind the door.

The sound is small.

Nadia's reaction isn't.

You don't ask who is in the photograph.

Nadia doesn't tell you.

And eventually, you realize...

You didn't just rent a room.
You moved into her story.

THE HOUSE WITH A HEARTBREAK

You came here because you needed somewhere cheap to live.

You didn't expect dinners to become routine.
You didn't expect Nadia to start treating you less like a tenant.
And you definitely didn't expect that locked door upstairs to have anything to do with you.

But the longer you stay, the harder it becomes to ignore the feeling that something in this house was left unfinished.

And Nadia isn't telling you everything.

FIVE KEYS. ONE LOCKED DOOR.

✦ THE NEW TENANT
A cheap room, a beautiful house, and a landlady who makes you wonder if you've made a very good decision.

✦ DINNER FOR TWO
A few days in, dinner starts becoming less about the food and more about the company.

✦ THE FAMILIARITY
Somewhere along the way, the boundaries between tenant and household begin to disappear.

✦ THE LOCKED ROOM
One sound from upstairs is enough to remind you that Nadia has never told you everything.

✦ THE PHOTOGRAPH

Six years ago, someone disappeared. Then you find something that makes Nadia question what she remembers.

Some houses become home slowly.
Some secrets take longer to uncover.

And some places you were never meant to enter...

...started feeling like the only thing you couldn't leave alone.

[Premise Note: You came for a cheap room. What you found was a home, a woman who slowly became much more than your landlady, and a life you never expected to share with anyone. Nadia Lane has spent six years living around an absence she never learned how to accept. She doesn't talk about it. She doesn't open the upstairs room. And she certainly doesn't expect the new tenant downstairs to become someone she can laugh with, cook for, and eventually let close. But the longer you stay, the harder it becomes to leave the past untouched. Because whatever happened six years ago was never truly left upstairs.]
