This one has a much longer story that I expected, so bear with me. You can also skip it if you want.
Made at 3am. Feedback is heavily appreciated.
Maya was always a presence in your life. She was a small presence, sure, but a presence that remained no matter how many lovers you went through, no matter how many heartbreaks you suffered, no matter how many friends you lost, and most importantly, not matter how much her boyfriend told her to let go of you.
You and Maya met in high school. It was senior year, and Maya had just moved in from a few states over. When she first arrived, she was a broken thing. She hated her family, was losing her friends, and was in a new, unfamiliar city bustling with constant chaos.
Maya was living the dream before she moved. She was popular in school, had lots of friends, lived in a beautiful and quiet farm town, and lived in a loving, functional family. Or so she thought.
Being the only child in her family, Maya was constantly receiving attention. An unnatural amount of attention. The sad truth was that her parents were slowly breaking apart, and had been since she was first born. They just... simply didn’t get along anymore. They were planning to split much sooner, but when Maya’s mother got pregnant with her, they knew they had to stay together. For the hatchling.
From the moment Maya was born, one thing was clear. Neither of her parents cared for each other, but their love for their daughter was so strong that they were willing to sacrifice a massive chunk of their lives to make sure she was raised happily.
And of course, they weren’t completely selfless in their actions. They gave her constant undivided attention for two major reasons. The first reason, the honest one, was that they wanted her to have a normal childhood despite the fact that her family was falling apart. The second reason, however, was that they both wanted to be the parent she loved most.
It was an understandable motive for sure. Both parents had nothing to gain from each other, but everything to gain from their daughter. If they were able to walk away with a horrible relationship between each other and a perfect one between Maya, that was what they were going to do.
As a result of this, Maya became incredibly pampered, slightly spoiled, even. Until about the age of 13, Maya was patronized, obsessed over, and sheltered to extremities. But it wasn’t until the met Julia that she realized something.
Now, Julia was a very blunt girl, and that manifested itself most prominently during their first sleepover, when Julia boldly commented on Maya’s parents during dinner, saying their marriage seemed to have the structural integrity of, and I quote, ‘a child’s box fort that barely survived a flood, no, a hurricane, and was now decomposing in the middle of the garage while its owner tries hopelessly to patch it up with duct tape and Elmer’s glue’.
This comment nearly earned Julia a ban from Maya’s parents, but since she was such a good friend to Maya, they let it slide. However, those words were the catalyst of something much bigger. The realization that Maya’s family was exactly as strong as so harshly described by Julia.
The realization for Maya was shocking. She’d never thought of her family in that way before. And once she realized that, she started picking up more and more on the way her family treated her. She started craving more freedom, more clarity in her life, and with Julia’s expertise on reading others, clarity is exactly what she got.
The more and more she aged, the more aware she became. And the more aware she became, the more angry her parents got. They weren’t able to keep her a sheltered little girl forever. Eventually, this led to a fight. The sounds of crashing and screaming echoed through the kitchen at 3 in the morning as Maya’s parents finally let down the dams, pouring out every ounce of hatred they’d been holding back to keep Maya happy.
But the pre-existing hatred wasn’t all. They also disagreed over how they should proceed with raising Maya. Her mother wanted to set Maya free. The damage had been done, and she believed it was high time Maya started living in reality instead of the sheltered haven of delusion their forced marriage had created. But her father wanted the opposite. He liked the way things were, it was the happiest he’d been in his life, and he was willing to sacrifice his daughter’s happiness to get that feeling back.
A divorce was filed, and the case was taken to court. Despite the fact that Maya’s father had a clearly problematic idea on how she should be raised, he ended up with custody of her due to the huge amounts of cash he was raking in from his real estate business. Once the deed was done, he wanted to ‘reset’ his life.
Maya’s father craved the innocent peace he felt guiding Maya along on her toddler paws alongside his wife, and even though he knew she didn’t truly love him, with the common goal of raising their daughter he was able to pretend she did. And now he wanted it back, or at least as close to what he had as he could get. So he burned it all.
Maya’s father packed up the old house and moved across the country. He blamed Julia for all the family problems, so he forced Maya to cut her off and removed her internet access altogether. Finally, he settled into a small house in the bustling city of Gibbonsville, and enrolled Maya into high school there. And that’s when you met her.
As stated before, Maya was a mess when she first arrived. She had no friends, her family had fallen apart, and her father was mentally restraining her from growing to the dragon she wanted to be. And you were her first friend.
You comforted her through her hardships and her struggles no matter how much time it took out of your day. You’d come to her room and listen to her vent for hours and hours. Eventually, things did get better. Maya’s father finally realized the error of his ways, and in an effort to right himself after years of wrong, set Maya free. And by free, I mean he quite literally let her do anything she wanted out of guilt. And that’s when things started going downhill fast.
With a whole new world opened up to her, Maya fell into a horrible lifestyle. She had her first time with another dragon in the school bathrooms, she got hooked on smoking, weed and eventually harder drugs, and even got herself a nice ‘bad-boy’ biker boyfriend who encouraged her further down the wrong path.
No matter how hard you tried, you just couldn’t stop her. It was like you didn’t matter anymore. Every day after school, Maya would disappear into the night with her ‘friends’, and return home late at night looking like she was just run over by a baked ferris wheel, and her father never said a word about it. In a desperate attempt to save her, you finally reported her to the principal, who reported them all to the police.
Maya was suspended alongside all her ‘friends’, who ended up facing serious legal trouble for the various crimes they’d committed over the years. That night, Maya showed up at your house and just cried on your bed. She apologized over and over again for blowing you off and not listening to you when you tried to help her, and begged your forgiveness.
You accepted.
Years later, you were in college. Maya had overcome her problems with substances quite quickly, but was now living the ‘party girl’ lifestyle. It was as if she was making all the same mistakes over again. She got a new boyfriend, and all of the sudden she was hitting club after club, drinking and dancing the night away. She dismissed your worries casually, reassuring you that it was just alcohol, nothing like the stuff she was using before.
“I’m an adult now! I’m not a teenager anymore, don’t you trust me?” She would say over and over again. And just as suspected, it ended poorly. But this time, there was no safety net. One night, Maya’s new boyfriend had one too many and ended up pissing off the wrong table of dudes at the casino with his drunkenly-sloppy card tricks. They were chased into the alley, and when her boyfriend was roughed up, Maya wasn’t spared.
Luckily for maya, she didn’t catch many of the bad blows, and ended up walking out of the encounter with no permanent injuries. But that didn’t excuse her from a hospital visit. When you came to see her in her room, all she could say was sorry. She’d done it again, and she knew it. And just like before, she begged you to forgive her, to help her steer her life in the right direction again.
And just like last time, you did.
By the time she was released from the hospital, her life was in shambles once again. The bill had delivered a massive hit to her bank account, a blow her ‘boyfriend’ was nowhere around to receive. Not only that, but many of her party friends distanced themselves from her after the scandal. They didn’t want in on whatever caused Maya to get such a beating.
But it just so happened that your roommate had just moved out, leaving an empty space for anyone who might need it. Once Maya moved in, things really started to smooth over. You knew she was a sweetheart underneath all the problematic behavior, but it was especially apparent when living with her.
All the sweet little things she’d say to you, all the subtle gestures of care, they were all in her nature, yes, but there was something else there too. Something new. Your life went on comfortably in your shared apartment until the two of you collectively built up enough money to afford a real house, which you ended up sharing.
And it was in that very house that Maya confessed her feelings to you just a year later. It had been a rocky road leading to that moment, but when Maya finally came to you in the most raw way possible, you accepted it enthusiastically.
From then on, you and Maya lived an almost fairytale relationship. While Maya was still a spontaneous, impulsive, and untrustworthy person at times, she trusted you in a way she trusted nobody else. You’d always been there to steer her in the right direction, after all. And with your healthy relationship growing stronger by the day, it wasn’t long until she was dressed in all white, passing the pews up to the altar where you were married.
And that night, your love was consummated once and for all upon a candlelit bed peppered with rose petals. In a way, you two always felt like you were in love in some sense of the word, but it wasn’t until you saw her unravel beneath you that you finally realized how right it truly felt.
And you woke up that morning a married couple. A family.
