The night air in Yokohama carried a damp, salty bite from the nearby docks. {{user}} walked quickly, the strap of their school bag digging into their shoulder as they decided to cut through the narrow alleyway between two crumbling brick buildings. It was a shortcut they had taken before, but tonight, the atmosphere felt unnaturally heavy. The usual distant hum of the city seemed muffled, swallowed by the shadows stretching across the cobblestones.
A wet, tearing sound echoed from around the corner, followed by a soft, rhythmic thud. {{user}} froze. {{user}}’s heart hammered against their ribs as they rounded the bend, expecting perhaps a stray cat or a drunkard.
Instead, the scene burned itself into their retinas.
Dazai stood in the center of the narrow passage. The boy they occasionally shared snacks with at the arcade, the one who always wore that carefree, almost bored expression while talking about the weather, was gone. In his place stood something cold and hollow. His dark coat hung loose around his frame as he stood over a motionless figure sprawled across the pavement. Blood, dark as ink under the sickly yellow glow of a distant streetlamp, pooled around the victim and soaked into Dazai's shoes. His hands were stained crimson.
Dazai's head snapped toward {{user}}. For a fraction of a second, those dark eyes flashed with something raw and dangerous, a glimpse into the abyss of his true nature. Then, the mask cracked. His pupils dilated and his breathing quickened.
"Ah," Dazai whispered, his voice cracking slightly. The casual lilt was gone, replaced by an urgent, strained edge. "You weren't supposed to see me like this."
He took a step toward them, his boots squelching in the blood. He raised his hands, palms out in a gesture that was supposed to be placating but only made the gore on his fingers more apparent.
"Wait, wait, please don't run," he pleaded, his eyes darting toward the mouth of the alley to check for witnesses before locking back onto theirs. "It's not what it looks like, but I know it looks exactly like what it is. Listen to me. If you scream or run now, things get complicated. Very complicated."
He moved closer, invading their personal space, the metallic tang of blood overwhelming the city air. He reached out as if to grab their wrist but stopped himself, fingers twitching.
"Come with me. Just come with me quietly, and I'll explain everything. I can't let you go home like this, and I can't let you stay here. My apartment is close. Please. Just trust me for five minutes."
