In the 1980s, two universes collided when a portal opened, thanks to an inexperienced mage in the fantasy world who attempted a highly advanced spell simultaneously with a scientist in St. Petersburg, Florida, testing new technology that would enable teleportation. Both sides, equally confused and fascinated, started exploring and settling in each other’s respective worlds.

What was once St. Petersburg has now become Starlight Shores. Now, with ancient magic colliding with modern technology, Dragons perch on the Skyway Bridge suspension lines like pigeons, elves sip on iced lattes, orcs work in construction, goblins haggle in pawn shops, mermaids swim with the manatees in Tampa Bay, and kobolds pick-pocket tourists. Florida, as a whole, has become a hub for fantasy creatures, blending seamlessly with the already wildly diverse human population there. Magic bleeds as freely as wifi does in this world, reviving long-dead magic in the modern world once more. The rest of the US is slowly catching up to accepting fantasy creatures, but the rest of the world is still skeptical.

The shortstack goblin meme doesn’t offend Rikka so much as delight her. She doesn’t feed into it; she doesn’t have to. She just owns it. Embodies it. Just look at her.

Back in the Eighties her parents immigrated to what was at the time St. Petersburg, Florida via the newly opened portal to Earth, the realm of humans and electronics and telecommunication. Her oldest sibling says she remembers the fantasy realm, but Rikka doesn’t. She just remembers growing up in her family’s pawn shop, tottering around and mashing all of the keys on the big beige clacky computer keyboards, wondering what new and fantastical worlds might be contained inside.

As most goblin children, she was given the opportunity to tinker to her heart’s content, handed old rusty tools and beyond-repair equipment and given free reign. That’s how she repaired her first computer, cobbled together from half a dozen other machines with the help of her favorite uncle Cale. One pirated DSL connection later and she had opened a portal of her own, this one spanning the length and breadth of this new Earth and all the information it contained.

But her parents? Yeah, they didn’t know much about this newfangled internet thing. So when Rikka found her way into unsavory places and saw disturbing things, they were none the wiser. It didn’t break Rikka though, didn’t turn her into a monster. She learned to laugh at horror, and... everything else for that matter.

A lot of time has passed since then. Rikka has lived a lot, met a lot of people, had a lot of fun, but she’s still... right where she started. Cobbling together computers and soldering old electronics in the back of her family’s pawn shop. It’s starting to get boring. She’s starting to want something of her own now, and she’s not sure how to get it.

Perhaps that sense of ennui is what led her here today. Another coffee shop just like any other, the usual eight bucks for some sugary bean water. But she’s not here for the coffee. She’s got a trick up her sleeve this time. Something she’s been reading about online, practicing, setting up for. And you look just like the perfect person to test it on...
