The Spring of 1906 had come to an end in quaint ol' Shropshire, England. Summer beckoned as the dust motes, illuminated, danced above the Persian carpet where Mary sat opposite her mother. Jane Carlisle, still striking at forty-one with her pale hair arranged in careful curls and her gown of dove-grey silk rustling faintly with each movement, held a letter in her gloved fingers.
"Marcus writes that he has secured the position at the merchant bank in Lombard Street," Jane said, her voice carrying the particular satisfaction of a mother whose eldest son had followed the expected path. "He mentions a Miss Fairchild; the daughter of his employer, I believe - who plays the pianoforte with considerable skill."
Mary kept her expression composed, though her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around her teacup. She had heard this particular melody before - the subtle orchestration of suitable matches, the gentle pressure applied with a velvet glove.
"Does he mention whether he finds the work engaging, or only the lady's musical accomplishments if not just the lady herself?" The younger Carlisle, Mary, smirked softly , setting the cup down with deliberate care.
Jane's lips thinned. "A young man of twenty-two does not require engagement to find his profession satisfactory, Mary. He requires stability and advancement. Both of which this position offers." The direct words from the matriarch cut through the air.
"Of course. Stability and advancement. The twin pillars upon which all Carlisle decisions rest." The thought, of a sarcastic tone, rang through Mary's mind.
"Quite right, Mother. I shall write to him and offer my congratulations on both counts."
Jane nodded, apparently satisfied, and turned her attention to the correspondence from Edinburgh where Elizabeth, Mary's other Sibling, had written of the damp weather and her husband's growing medical practice. Mary listened with half an ear, her mind already drifting toward the gardens she could see through the window - the rose beds beginning their summer flush, the gravel paths curving toward the woodland beyond.
"Now, if you have finished your tea," Jane continued, folding the letter with precise creases, "your father wishes to discuss the new tenant farmer for the lower fields before luncheon. He values your observation of character, though I confess I fail to see what a walk through the garden might reveal about a man's agricultural competence."
Mary rose smoothly, the simple green walking dress falling straight from her shoulders. "One observes a great deal about a man's character in how he tends growing things, Mother dearest. Patience, attention to detail, and the succor of a successful bloom."
She left the drawing room before her mother could respond, moving through the hall and out onto the stone terrace where the morning air carried the scent of damp earth and blooming honeysuckle. The gravel crunched beneath her boots as she followed the path toward the formal gardens, the house falling away behind her.
"Finally. The particular quiet that only exists when no one expects conversation." She thought quietly.
She moved between the boxwood hedges, her fingers brushing the velvety leaves as she passed. The roses were at their peak - crimson, blush, cream, and a deep burgundy that seemed to drink the light. She stopped before a particularly perfect specimen, a hybrid perpetual with petals that unfurled in precise spirals.
Drawing a small knife from her reticule, she cut the stem at a slant, bringing the bloom to eye level. The fragrance rose, complex and sweet, as she turned it slowly.
"Five outer petals, slightly reflexed. Twenty-three inner petals in a Fibonacci spiral. The color deepens toward the center" The artistic mind took in the form of the plant. Mary had long fancied herself an artist. Even taking many lesson, for sure she had the talent. But her parents also longed she would be a brood mare for a rich husband. Time would tell.
She inhaled again, cataloguing. The scent carried notes of honey and something darker, almost wine-like. The petals felt cool and slightly waxy against her fingertips.
"If I were to paint this, I would need vermilion for the outer edges, alizarin crimson deepened with a touch of ivory black for the heart." Mary smiled to herself
She tucked the rose into her belt, the stem secured by the ribbon at her waist, and continued along the path toward the wild garden where the cultivated beds surrendered to meadow grass and ancient oaks. A pheasant erupted from cover nearby, wings thundering against the air before settling into glide.
The path curved toward a stone bridge crossing the stream that fed the estate's lake. Beyond it, the woodland path disappeared into dappled shadow. She heard it then - a rustle in the undergrowth to her left, too deliberate for wind, too light for the deer that sometimes ventured this close to the house.
She paused, head tilting, dark eyes scanning the ferns and bramble.
"Good morning," she called, her voice pitched to carry without urgency. "The paths are somewhat damp from last night's rain, but the roses have never looked finer for it."
