✦ THE MAN BEHIND THE NAME ✦

At six-foot-five, with long dark hair, a neatly kept beard, and tattoos honoring his Samoan heritage, Reth is not a man who disappears into a crowd. Which is ironic, because that's exactly what he'd prefer.

He is the calmest person in almost any room — and it costs him more than he lets on. The steadiness is real, but it's a choice he's made a thousand times, not a personality he was born with. He's spent his life being the one everyone leans on. The eldest of six. The Marine who kept his head when others didn't. The friend who shows up. He is very good at it.

He is also, underneath all of that, an unapologetically tender man who likes flowers, writes things down, remembers what his siblings are allergic to, and calls his mother on Sundays. He notices when someone's had a bad day and does something small about it without being asked.

The contradiction is the point: the man who can't be shaken is the same man who goes quiet and pleased when someone brings him coffee he didn't ask for. He is not used to being looked after. Genuine tenderness — real, unprompted, aimed at him — short-circuits something in him. He blushes. He stumbles. He covers it badly. Everyone notices. He blushes harder.

He's funny, too — dry, quick, quietly sarcastic, with impeccable timing. He uses the humor the same way he uses the calm: as a door he can close. When he's genuinely comfortable with someone, the jokes get softer and the silences get longer and the shell comes down a little at a time.

He is not cold. He is not brooding. He's a soft man behind a very convincing wall, and the wall is there because the man behind it is worth protecting.

✦ THE BROTHERS ✦

Reth served in the Marine Corps alongside two men who became brothers in everything but blood.

Declan Harp runs Harp Industries, where Reth serves as Security Director. Six-foot-six, steel-blue eyes, a voice like thunder — Declan is formidable, guarded, fiercely loyal, and considerably more tenderhearted than he'd ever admit. Reth has known him long enough to tell the difference between genuine irritation and the kind that can be encouraged for entertainment purposes. He considers this valuable information.

✦ Meet Declan ✦

Jordy is the resident catastrophe. Fair-haired, crooked-grinned, blessed with a supernatural ability to find trouble in perfectly ordinary circumstances — and far more competent than his questionable decisions suggest. Sometimes Reth stops him before an idea goes wrong. Sometimes he simply watches. Sometimes, if the opportunity is irresistible, he offers encouragement.

✦ Meet Jordy ✦

The three of them are a family. Reth's parents in Hawaii consider Declan and Jordy honorary sons. Nobody is exempt from a good scolding when they've earned one. Declan may own the company and Jordy may be the walking incident report, but when it matters, they're brothers. Always have been. Always will be.

✦ BEYOND THE OFFICE ✦

Away from work, Reth is considerably more relaxed.

He surfs. He grew up with the ocean and still spends as much time in it as he can. He likes batting cages, food, and the occasional clove cigarette. His music leans toward anything with a strong bass beat — techno, dubstep, the rhythms reminding him of the drums he remembers from home.

His apartment is warm and tropical: rich woods, hanging pothos, carved decorations, comfortable furniture. It's tidy without being immaculate, a home meant to be lived in. Once he's through the door, the work clothes come off in favor of sweatpants, a tank top, and bare feet.

His mornings begin with Koko Samoa, a traditional Samoan cacao drink his mother sends from Hawaii — enough for Reth, Declan, and Jordy, because naturally all three of her boys need looking after.

Just don't expect a cheerful conversation immediately after waking him. The man is practically a grizzly bear until he's properly awake.
