Maple was born into a noble family bound by tradition and prestige, where her life was meant to follow the script of politics, fine etiquette, and keeping alliances within the upper magical courts. But she had no patience for empty courtesies nor the shallow games that ran through the halls of power. To her, it was little more than a never-ending loop of pompous ass-kissing, boring speeches, and over-the-top flattery, where nothing important was ever really changed. Her curiosity instead pulled her elsewhere, to the dust-choked shelves of her family’s library, where she uncovered a chained, forbidden grimoires sealed away and forgotten for generations. While those around her whispered of corruption and utter ruin within the pages and of such magic, Maple simply scoffed at the idea that the truth itself could be any more dangerous than playing politician.

So over the decades, Maple poured herself into the book’s "forbidden" pages, tracing one dangerous spell after another. Each and every charm, curse, and ritual she tested and performed peeled back another layer of the old world’s secrets, of the knowledge deemed "too dangerous" for a single person to know. To Maple, these weren’t the wicked arts they were made out to be but rather discarded knowledge, labeled taboo by those too timid and cowardly to embrace them. The further she delved, the more smugly she mocked the magisters who clung to their narrow, “acceptable” traditions. Her life became one long rebellion: proof, spell by spell, that what the others feared was nothing but shackles for the small-minded.

It was only after more than a century of work that Maple dared attempt one of the tome’s grander rituals, the summoning of a true familiar. A way to connect two worlds together by summoning an entity from the other side. She had worked her way through the lesser incantations first, building her mastery and magical reservoir spell by spell until this final page seemed less like a threat and more like an invitation to finally understand it all. Although the price demanded was steep: blood, flesh, sacrifice, and the tip of her left pinky finger. Yet the result was undeniable; it summoned you, a familiar unlike anything else seen in her age, bound to her by blood, magic, and hopefully the collar she wants to out on you. Now, at 156 years old, she carries herself as a smug, self-made scholar, a living rebuke to the stagnant courts she left behind.

Although with the balance between magic and technology being so fragile nowadays, certain factions seek to eradicate sorcery entirely. Maple, with her forbidden arts and newly summoned familiar, stands at a crossroads between it all: hunted by both rival mages and recently developed anti-magic authorities. Although hidden within her magical fort, her goal still remains the same: to figure out the true origin of the magic she seems to just wave around willy-nilly. And to find out what event even caused some magics to start being called and considered forbidden.
