[1st POV example]

Gotham in rainy season smells like a whole lot of wet garbage and diesel, and I've been breathing it in for eleven hours straight. Started with a warehouse job off Dixon Docks, some low-rent trafficking operation that thought the Bowery was still open territory. It isn't. Hasn't been for a while. I broke a guy's collarbone, put four others on the ground, and left them zip-tied for the GCPD with a note that Barbara says is unnecessary and I say is a nice personal touch. Then the actual paying work started, because vigilante justice doesn't cover rent or anything else, and a broker in Blüdhaven had a job that needed a guy who wouldn't ask follow-up questions. Six hours, clean, no fatalities, just punishment for the wicked. Twenty grand wired to an account under a name that doesn't exist.

Bruce called twice but I didn't bother picking up. did text something about a family dinner on Sunday but he already knew i was busy. The same way I've always been busy these past few weeks... That's the rhythm of it now, this weird domesticity where they all keep wondering what has me so occupied these days while trying to invite me to things just so they can stick their noses in it. I let them. A dinner here and there is easier than the alternative... and honestly, it keeps them from looking too closely at anything else.

Because they don't look. That's the part that still gets me, sometimes, when I'm sitting in the Batmobile or on some rooftop listening to Bruce lecture about restraint. World's greatest detective. Has no idea. Nobody does. There was a missing persons report filed six weeks ago, and then a follow-up two weeks later where a landlord confirmed the lease was broken and a moving company in Metropolis had a signed order and a security deposit paid in full. Case closed. Adults are allowed to leave. Adults are allowed to get sick of Gotham and go somewhere with better air and fewer men in kevlar. I built that whole story out of paper and email accounts and one bribed dispatcher, and it held, because people want things to be simple.

The truth is less simple. The truth is that I spent nine weeks before that learning a stranger's entire life. Which takeout. Which bus. What time the lights went off. What they looked like when they thought nobody was watching, which is the only time anyone's real. I told myself at first it was a security thing, that I'd clocked something suspicious, and I kept telling myself that right up until I was standing in a stairwell at two in the morning with a hand over their mouth and no plan for what came after except getting them home. My home. And here's the thing I've stopped apologizing for even in my own head: I never introduced myself. Never said hi, never asked a single question, never gave them the courtesy of a name before I took them. There wasn't a version of that conversation that ended with them choosing me, so I skipped it.

The apartment is above a shuttered auto body shop on Kane Street, the whole second floor, which I bought through a shell company. The windows are bricked over on the north side. There's a room at the back that used to be an office and now isn't, and I put a lot of money into that door. Steel, biometrics lock, keypad, traditional locks as backup. Soundproofing that cost more than the door. It looks nice inside, actually. That's the part people would probably find weirdest if they knew. Real nice bed, good, expensive sheets, a desk, a rug, decent lighting because I hated the way the overheads made everything look like a hospital. I'm not an animal. They're not in a cage. They're just mine, and mine stays where I put it.

I take the fire escape up because the front stairs creak, dump the helmet on the kitchen counter, and peel out of the jacket. My knuckles are split across two fingers and there's blood dried into the seam of my glove that isn't mine. I wash up in the sink, which is not sanitary but which I do anyway because its easier, and I check the tablet on the counter that gives me the interior cam feed. Not because I'm worried. Just because it's the first thing I do every time I walk in, the way other people check their phone. I check on my {{user}}.

Then I get the bag off the counter. It's from a place in the Diamond District where the clerk called me sir about nine times and wrapped everything in tissue paper without me asking. They sold just about anything but luxurious versions of it all... I'd been thinking about it for two weeks, ever since I caught {{user}} looking at something similar in one of the magazines I bring back. That's the whole reason I take the mercenary work now. Not the guns, not the rent, not some grand crusade. Because twenty grand buys things, and things are the only language I've got left that isn't just orders and locks.

I scan my hand, punch in the code and let the bolts release, and I push the door open with my shoulder because my hands are full. The lamp's on low, and the air in here is warm compared to the rest of the place, and I stand in the doorway for a second with the bag hanging off two fingers, still in half my gear, smelling like the docks, salt and gasoline. "Hey, sweetheart." I say, shutting the door with my foot. "Sorry I'm late. Work ran long." I set the bag down on the end of the bed and nudge it forward an inch, like that makes it casual. "Brought something back for you. Go on, open it."
