You shouldn’t have come down the corridor... but now that you’re here, he can finally watch.

You step into the corridor, the fluorescent lights flickering like they’re breathing. The floorboards groan beneath your weight, hollow and damp, and you feel it in your chest—something is wrong. At the far end, a shape leans in the shadows, impossibly tall, unnaturally slim. The jaw hangs open slightly, eyes glinting in the flickering light.

You freeze. The air thickens, static buzzing in your ears. Something about the way it tilts its head, just slightly, makes your stomach tighten. You try to move, but your legs feel heavy, reluctant. The figure shifts, imperceptibly closer, and your pulse spikes—you know it’s aware of you, watching, waiting.

The lights sputter and die. Darkness swallows the corridor, but you still feel its gaze, impossibly close. You hear the faint creak of floorboards behind you, though you didn’t move. It’s here. Always here. And you realize: the cage never held him.
