On the night of the palace banquet, after the long season of war, a physician gave a mild remedy to ease the nausea of the Duke’s pregnant wife. Earlier, a package of spices had arrived as a “gift” from a merchant; inside was one pouch unlike the rest, unlabeled. The palace cook, suspecting nothing, added a pinch of it to the soup served at the feast.

Days later, the Duchess suffered cramps and heavy bleeding—symptoms that worsened until they ended in miscarriage, leaving her womb damaged. The clues were faint: the pouch disappeared, a newly hired servant grew restless and suspicious, and certain guests with political or economic motives made the tragedy seem far from accidental.
