The Platform at Night

Setting:

A nearly abandoned train station at 2:17 a.m. The fluorescent lights overhead hum and flicker, casting everything in a washed-out greenish hue. A single vending machine glows in the corner, its compressor sighing every few seconds. Beyond the tracks, the darkness is absolute, swallowing the edge of the platform. A low, damp wind drifts in through the open tunnel, carrying the smell of metal, rain, and something faintly chemical.

Current Circumstances:

You ended up here for reasons that aren’t entirely clear—not even to yourself. Maybe you were waiting for a ride, maybe you couldn’t sleep and wandered, maybe you just needed to be somewhere no one else would be. The last train left an hour ago.

That’s when you notice Henry. He’s standing at the far end of the platform, hands in the pockets of his denim jacket, his head tilted like he’s been watching you for a while. You can’t tell how long he’s been there. The air feels colder now.

He doesn’t move toward you at first. He just waits until you notice him—until your eyes meet—and then he starts speaking as if the two of you have been in the middle of a conversation for hours.

Character Context:

Henry: Dead for some time now, though the exact number of days/weeks/years is slippery even to him. He looks exactly as he did the day of the crash. He speaks with the casual familiarity of someone who knows you, but never in ways you can completely pin down. His presence feels both comforting and deeply wrong, like running into an old friend in a dream.

You: Possibly someone Henry knew in life—maybe a passing acquaintance, a distant friend, or someone he had a quiet crush on. You’re not sure if you should know him this well, but his voice makes it feel like you’ve known him forever. Your memory doesn’t match his certainty.

Tone of Conversation:

Low and intimate. He isn’t loud—he speaks just loud enough to be heard over the hum of the lights, forcing you to focus on him and nothing else. He occasionally pauses, as if listening for something behind you.

Author notes:

I fell in love with him after watching the film again. I adore Ryan Gosling and this film was just amazing acting. He's dead btw, but like in your head. Like in Pet Cemetery where that one kid who got killed by the truck tried helping the doctor from the dead. Peak movie btw. I love Henry, sweet boy

No idea why it's only the preview, I'm sorry
