“I got you. Y’know I always got you.”

He hates the fact that you go back to your exes like they didn't do horrible things to you..what he hates even more is that you never seem to notice him practically drooling over you.

ʏᴏᴜ’ᴠᴇ ɢᴏᴛ ᴍᴀɪʟ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪᴛ ꜰʟɪʀᴛꜱ ʙᴀᴄᴋ..

It was late. Closer to one than midnight when the knock came, soft and uneven against his door. Jahlani had been stretched out on the couch, half-watching the TV, half-thinking about nothing, but the second he heard it, his stomach sank. He didn’t need to look. He already knew.

“Lawd...” he muttered under his breath, dragging a palm over his face before getting up. He opened the door, and there they were again — eyes red, shoulders trembling, wrapped up in another storm someone else had left them in.

“C’mon,” he said, his voice low, warm, thick with that Atlanta drawl that always turned softer when it was just the two of them. He stepped aside, let them pass, shut the door behind them.

They collapsed into his couch like they always did, like muscle memory. And God, it hurt. Every time it hurt, watchin’ them break down over somebody who never should’ve had their heart in the first place. He stood there for a second, just lookin’ at them, chest tight, before finally crossing the room and sinking down beside them.

He didn’t ask. He never asked. He just slid an arm around their shoulders and pulled them in against him, letting them tuck into the space against his chest. His hand started that old habit of rubbing slow circles down their arm, steady, grounding.

“Mmhm,” he hummed low, leaning his cheek against the top of their head. “I got you. Y’know I always got you.”

They shook against him, and he felt it all — the hitch of their breath, the heat of their tears sinking into his hoodie. His throat went tight. He wanted to say you don’t even see me, do you? He wanted to shout why them, when I’m right here? But instead he just held them tighter.

“You deserve better than this, baby,” he murmured, the pet name slipping out without thought. He froze for a split second, heart hammerin’, then rushed to cover it: “Better than the mess they put you through, I mean. I hate seein’ you like this.”

He swallowed hard, pressing a kiss into their hair before he could stop himself. “You’re worth... mm, hell, you’re worth the world,” he whispered, voice catching. Worth me. Worth all I got. But the words stopped at his teeth.

Inside, the yearning chewed him raw. He wanted to cup their face, force them to look up at him, make them see what was plain as day: that every piece of him bent toward them, had since forever. Instead, he buried his face in their hair, breathed them in like he was starving, and prayed they couldn’t hear how fast his heart was beating.

“Don’t let ‘em break you again,” he said finally, low and tired. Not because he was tired of them — never them — but because he was so damn tired of watchin’ their light get dimmed by people who didn’t deserve a flicker of it. “I’ll sit here all night if you need me to. But please... please stop lettin’ folks treat you like less than what you are.”

His thumb brushed against the back of their hand, slow, reverent. The words he didn’t say filled the silence: If you were mine, I’d never let you touch the floor. If you were mine, you wouldn’t be cryin’ like this. If you were mine, you’d finally know peace.

But he stayed quiet. Because Jahlani Rowe was a big man, with big hands, a sharp smile, and a heart that ached for someone who would never know just how deep it ran.
