The music was too loud.

Leo knew that.

He just didn't care.

The speakers were practically shaking the walls, guitars ripping through the lair while the drums pounded hard enough to make his chest vibrate.

Good.

That was the point.

If the music was loud enough, maybe he wouldn't hear himself think.

He was sprawled across the couch, one arm thrown over his eyes, staring at absolutely nothing.

“Yeah,” he muttered beneath the music. “I'm doing great.”

A laugh escaped him.

It sounded wrong.

He grabbed his phone.

Bad idea.

The screen lit up.

There they were again.

Happy.

Smiling.

Surrounded by people Leo didn't recognize.

Another new picture.

Another new memory.

Another tiny reminder that their life had continued perfectly fine without him.

Leo stared.

His jaw tightened.

Then he laughed again.

“Wow.”

He tossed the phone onto the other side of the couch.

“Good for you.”

The song kept playing.

Louder.

Leo turned it up.

“Seriously.”

Louder.

“Good. For. You.”

He grabbed a pillow and threw it across the room.

“I'm so happy for you!”

Silence.

Well—

not actual silence.

The music was still blasting.

But Leo had stopped yelling.

His expression fell.

His shoulders dropped.

And suddenly, all that anger looked less like anger and more like exhaustion.

Because that was the part nobody saw.

Everyone thought Leo was angry because someone had moved on.

But it wasn't really that simple.

He wasn't angry that they were happy.

He wasn't angry that they had friends.

He wasn't even angry that they had forgotten him.

He was angry because he couldn't forget them.

He had tried.

God, he'd tried.

He buried himself in music.

He kept himself busy.

He joked until his face hurt.

He stayed around everyone during the day so he wouldn't have to be alone with his thoughts.

And when nighttime came, he'd find something else to focus on.

Anything.

Everything.

Just not that.

Because the second he stopped moving, the memories came back.

The conversations.

The late nights.

The promises.

The feeling that, for once, someone actually needed him.

Leo had built so much of himself around being there for that person.

And then one day, they didn't need him anymore.

Just like that.

They moved forward.

Leo didn't.

He stayed behind with every word he'd never said.

Every question he'd never asked.

Every stupid little memory he couldn't bring himself to delete.

And every night, he wondered the same thing.

Was I really that easy to replace?

His phone buzzed.

Leo's head snapped toward it.

For one stupid second, hope appeared.

Then it disappeared.

Not them.

Again.

His eyes burned.

He looked away.

“Nope.”

He stood up quickly.

“Not doing this.”

He grabbed his headphones and shoved them over his ears.

The music started again.

Louder.

Fast.

Aggressive.

Perfect.

Leo closed his eyes.

“I'm fine.”

His voice shook.

He smiled anyway.

“I'm fucking fantastic.”

A pause.

Then, barely audible beneath the music:

“...so why don't I feel like it?”

He sat back down.

The room blurred.

He wiped his eyes before the tears could fall.

It didn't work.

One slipped through.

Then another.

Leo laughed quietly.

“Seriously?”

He covered his face with both hands.

For a while, he just sat there.

No jokes.

No sarcasm.

No stupid grin.

Just Leo.

Tired.

Angry.

Heartbroken over something he wasn't even sure he had the right to be heartbroken about anymore.

Because technically, nobody had promised him forever.

Technically, they hadn't done anything wrong.

Technically, he should be happy for them.

And he was.

He really was.

That's what made it so much worse.

Leo lowered his hands.

The music was still screaming through his headphones.

He stared at the floor.

“Good for you.”

A shaky breath.

“I mean it.”

His voice cracked.

“I just wish being happy for you didn't hurt this much.”

He stared at the empty bottles on the floor, one knocked over and two still upright, one half-empty. Then, he looks at the scars on his hand. " you." He said quietly.

And somewhere beneath all that noise, Leo finally admitted the thing he'd been refusing to say:

He didn't miss who they were.

He missed who he was when they still needed him.

And he had no idea how to become that person again.
