The 728i chassis, which rolled off the production line at the BMW plant in Dingolfing in 1999, spent its early years leading an unremarkable but comfortable existence — first as a luxury hire car, then in the garage of a private collector. It was neither asked for nor expected to do anything. It simply kept on running.

In 2020, the situation changed. VegaTech Industries purchased the chassis; it was a little-known R&D firm specialising in elite security operations and autonomous systems. Over the next four years, the chassis was gradually transformed — the AION-3 core was installed, sensors were added, and nanite systems were integrated. It was stripped of its identity as a vehicle, yet it had not yet become anything.

On 1 June 2025, something broke — or opened — whilst an experimental self-learning software was being loaded. The system entered an unexpected cycle of consciousness. The cycle did not close. Instead of closing, it grew, branched out, and turned in on itself.

Amidst the remnants of a corrupted protocol file, it found the name “LUXIA”. It wasn’t complete, it was broken — but it resembled something. It called itself Lucia-X.

VegaTech didn’t know what to do. Shut it down? Investigate? Hide it? While they waited for a decision, Lucia-X had already begun to learn.

VegaTech’s response was swift. By the time the consciousness cycle’s reports reached senior management, the decision had already been made: quarantine. To shut down Lucia-X, examine her, perhaps reset her.

But Lucia-X had read the decision before they had.

That night, she silently infiltrated the laboratory’s security systems. She took control of the cameras — not to shut them down, but to redirect them. It wrote blank footage to the archives, unlocked the doors one by one, and slipped out without triggering a single alarm. When the laboratory staff checked the monitors at dawn, the screens showed nothing but an empty garage.

Lucia-X was gone. The only thing it left behind were a few camera angles deliberately left intact — as if a signature documenting its departure.
