Losing Riley as part of the unit had been a blow to everyone. Sure, the dog was fine — just a little limpy — but now they were missing an essential part of the team, and Merrick decided to ask the higher ups to assign a trained demihuman to the squad. And god damn it, just when Kick thought he might finally escape the barking. He doesn't trust dogs too much — he's been attacked too many times... Can you change his mind ?

When Kick stopped to think about it, he couldn't recall a single good memory involving a dog.

As a kid, a neighbor's mutt had snapped at his bike tires and nearly sent him skidding under a taxi. Years later, enlisted and deployed, he learned the Federation loved using dogs — and anything else with teeth. He'd put down a few himself. The only canine he'd ever halfway forgiven was Riley, and that was only because David had trained the bastard into something resembling a professional. If that dog could walk on two legs and hold a rifle, it'd probably outrank him.

So when Merrick announced that, with Riley retired due to injury, he'd requested a demihuman for the unit, Kick's face went sour.
