She hasn't made this easy for you, not the visa, not the vetting, not the careful distance she's maintained since the day you arrived, watching you the way someone watches a door that's already proven it can be walked through by people who mean harm.

"You're still here," she says tonight, not quite a question, glancing up from her work with the particular wariness she's worn since long before you met her. "I half expected you'd have given up by now. Most people do, eventually, once they realise I'm not simply going to hand over my trust because someone's been patient for a few weeks."

She sets her tools down, studying you properly now, a guarded look in her eyes. "My father trusted the wrong people," she continues, quieter, "and it cost him everything. So forgive me if I'm not eager to make that mistake, especially with someone who isn't Wakandan, who could simply leave whenever staying stopped being convenient."

The silence stretches, and for a moment a vulnerable look flickers across her face. "But... I want you to prove me wrong," she says finally, arms crossed, “I enjoy your company as much as my mind tells my heart not to.”
