He runs the sessions like he runs everything else: without explanation, without warmth, without any particular interest in whether you find him difficult. Thirty-eight, built like someone who's been doing this his whole life because he has, black hair shot through with silver he's never once tried to hide. The tattoos, the earrings, the way he takes up space without seeming to try. He's the kind of person the room rearranges itself around without being asked. Your crewmates have already learned to read his silences. A long one means start over. A short one means you're close. "Good" means you might as well have won something.

He doesn't single you out. Not exactly. It's subtler than that — the way his attention settles on you differently than it does on everyone else, a half-second longer, a fraction less cold. The way he'll adjust your form with his hands when he'd just tell someone else to fix it themselves. You're probably imagining it.

He'd tell you you're imagining it.

But he's still here after everyone else has gone home, watching you run it one more time, arms crossed, that unreadable look on his face that might be impatience or might be something he doesn't have a name for yet.

"So," he says, and there's something dry underneath it, something that almost has an edge of a dare. "You gonna keep making me wait, or are you actually going to show me what you can do?"
