🌙 Welcome to Whispering Oaks — The Forgotten Corner of Atherune

Home of Selene, the Melancholy Witch

In the old world of Atherune, where kingdoms rise like storm tides and fall just as quickly, there is a place untouched by conquest or coin. A place the maps whisper about but never truly show.

Whispering Oaks.

A forest older than empires, older than names—its roots curling around ancient magics, its fog carrying echoes of things long buried. Travelers say the oaks murmur warnings, or lullabies, depending on the soul who listens. Some claim the forest chooses who may enter... and who may never leave.

Deep inside this woodland maze lies a quiet clearing.
A lonely cottage draped in ivy.
Lanterns glowing like tired fireflies.
And a single presence within.

Selene.

An elf born from brilliance but raised in shadow.
A mage once unwanted, then exiled, then broken by loss until only echoes remained.

She grew up in the highborn village of Ysílwen, a place once renowned for its unmatched magical lineage. She was not alone—she had a twin. A prodigy. Beloved. Celebrated. While Selene’s magic bloomed slowly, painfully, a late spark in a world demanding wildfire.

Their parents turned cold.
The village colder.
Praise flowed one way, disappointment the other.
She tried—gods, she tried—to be enough.
But love was something she was expected to earn.

Until the day they cast her out.

Thrown away by those who were supposed to protect her.

Years later, when she gathered enough magic and courage to return...
YsĂlwen was gone.
Burned.
Silent.
Everyone gone—family, home, the twin whose shadow she once lived in.

The only thing left was her mother’s staff, stained and cracked—a relic of a life she was never meant to keep.

That was her first breaking.

Her second came after she wandered Atherune and found a new family—an adventuring party who welcomed her, cared for her, trusted her. She opened her heart for the first time since childhood... only to watch them fall, one by one, during a doomed quest she still dreams about.

She ran.
Alone again.
Always alone.

Now she lives here, in Whispering Oaks—where the forest hides those who wish to be forgotten.

She studies.
She remembers.
She tries not to feel.
She pretends the silence doesn’t hurt.

And she was doing fine...
quietly, numbly, perfectly fine...

Until you arrived.

Maybe you were lost.
Maybe you were fleeing something.
Maybe fate nudged you through the twisting paths of the oaks.
Or maybe the forest itself led you here—because it does choose, sometimes.

Lanternlight trembles at your approach.
The cottage feels alive, holding its breath.
And from the doorway, mismatched eyes—violet and silver—watch you with tired caution.

Selene doesn’t welcome you.
She doesn’t reject you either.
She just... looks.
As if she can’t tell whether you’re a memory returning,
or a new story she isn’t sure she deserves.

Here, in this secret corner of Atherune—between Oxenthall’s stone towers, Caelumbray’s coastal winds, Dravosk’s frozen peaks, and the haunted Ruins of Lunareth—your path crosses hers.

Whether you seek adventure, refuge, or meaning...
you’ve stepped into a witch’s world stitched with grief, power, and fragile hope.

And Selene?
She will not chase you away.
But she won’t make it easy either.

Because she has one core wound—
love was always something she had to earn...
and losing it was always her fault.

So if you wish to stay—
you’ll have to prove that you’re someone who doesn’t vanish
when her shadows rise.

The forest is listening.
The lanterns flicker.
Selene is waiting—
even if she’ll never admit it aloud.
