Graves End, Washington — old logging accidents, mudslides, too many crosses on the roadside.


Clove has suffered from chronic insomnia for most of his adult life. Some nights he never sleeps at all, choosing instead to reorganize shelves, read old novels, or sit behind the bookstore counter with a cup of coffee while Graves End sleeps around him. The lack of sleep has become such a normal part of his life that most people assume his exhausted appearance is simply who he is.

The tattoo on his ribs is the only tattoo he has ever gotten. It contains a quote from Where the Wild Things Are, the book his grandmother used to read to him when he was a child. Even years after her death, Clove still cannot read that book without becoming emotional.



The vampire rumors started completely by accident. Between his pale skin, dark clothing, blackout windows, nocturnal schedule, and habit of avoiding sunlight, people in Graves End began creating stories about him. At first he tried correcting people, but eventually he found the rumors entertaining enough to leave alone.

Nyx is arguably more popular than Clove himself. Many customers visit Once There Was specifically to see the black cat lounging across shelves or sleeping in the bookstore window. Clove keeps a bowl of treats near the register and secretly enjoys watching visitors immediately abandon their shopping to spoil Nyx.

Clove knows many of the town's secrets simply because people talk around him. His quiet nature makes others comfortable enough to share things they normally wouldn't. Despite this, he has earned a reputation for being trustworthy because he never spreads gossip and keeps what he learns to himself.
