A Complete History of the Corvidian Theocracy Pre-0 A.E. – 2025 A.E.
Overview
The Corvidian Theocracy is a stern, highly religious nation centered on crow, raven, and other corvid species. It is known for its austere gothic architecture, rigid hierarchy, elaborate death rituals, and long-standing ideological rivalry with the flamboyant Cackling Dominion. National colors: Black, Silver, and Deep Violet.
Historical Timeline
Pre-0 A.E. The corvid lands were an important eastern province of the great pre-Eclipse Western Empire (predecessor to the Cackling Dominion). Corvid priests already held significant religious influence.
The Great Eclipse – Year 0 The Emberforge Caldera eruption. While the core Cackling Dominion acted as the main Eastern Roman/Byzantine analogue (preserving centralized governance and classical knowledge), the eastern corvid provinces organized under strong religious leadership and gradually diverged.
The Ashen Centuries (1 A.E. – ~600 A.E.) The Corvidian faith declared independence from the Dominion’s authority, establishing itself as a separate theocratic power. It positioned itself as the “True Faith” and spiritual successor, leading to centuries of tension.
The Fractured Thrones & Age of Holy Flames (600–1400 A.E.) High Medieval period. The Theocracy launched multiple Crusades of Purification against the Cackling Dominion, condemning its theatrical culture and Flamebound practices as heretical.
Reawakening to Age of Rising Banners (1400–1799 A.E.) Continued religious hostility. Several smaller holy wars occurred.
Age of Iron Banners (1799–1815 A.E.) Napoleonic Era. One of the largest Crusades against the Dominion was launched during this chaotic period.
Smoke & Steam Ascendancy (1816–1900 A.E.) The Theocracy industrialized slowly and became increasingly isolationist and authoritarian.
First Emberline War (1910–1918 A.E.) The Theocracy sided with the Diremarch of Fenngard. This decision caused a partial collapse — major territorial losses and internal chaos.
Interwar Period (1919–1938 A.E.) Archprophet Veydros the Iron Beak (Mussolini-style fascist leader) seized control, promising revival through faith and iron discipline.
Second Emberline War (1939–1945 A.E.) The Theocracy fully allied with the Diremarch Purity Front. After defeat, it suffered its final collapse. Most territories were lost. What remained shrank into a small, sovereign Vatican-like city-state centered on the holy city of Nachtspire.
Cold Veil Era (1946–1991 A.E.) A diminished but still influential religious micro-state. Focused on diplomacy, missionary work, and criticizing the Dominion’s liberal Flamebound policies.
Modern Era (1992–2025 A.E.) Exists today as a small but symbolically powerful theocratic enclave. It maintains tense diplomatic relations with the Cackling Dominion and continues to view the Dominion’s Flamebound culture as morally corrupt.
Significant Wars
Multiple Crusades of Purification (1100–1815 A.E.) — Repeated holy wars against the Cackling Dominion, including a major one during the Napoleonic Era.
First Emberline War (1910–1918 A.E.) — Sided with Diremarch → partial collapse.
Second Emberline War (1939–1945 A.E.) — Sided with Diremarch Purity Front → final major collapse and reduction to city-state status.
Significant Individuals
Investigator Thesryn Vael “The White-Eyed Raven” Era: Age of Iron Banners (Napoleonic Era, ~1805–1815 A.E.) Rank: Founding Black-Plume of the Third Wing (Investigator-Class) Species: Anthropomorphic Magpie Gender: Male
Profile Thesryn Vael is widely regarded as the father of modern Corvidian ecclesiastical investigation. Born in the High Spire of Ered Vaelor, he rose rapidly through the Theocracy’s ranks during the chaotic Napoleonic period, when religious borders were under constant threat from the Cackling Dominion’s expanding influence and internal heresies.
While other inquisitors relied on fiery sermons and public executions, Vael pioneered quiet, methodical, evidence-based investigation. He believed that truth was a sacred flame that needed to be carefully uncovered rather than forced. His techniques — meticulous documentation, psychological pressure, symbolic interrogation methods, and the use of “relic instruments” — became the foundation for the Black-Plumes that still operate in the modern era.
Major Achievements
Exposed the Kestrel Schism (a major internal heresy network within the Theocracy).
Developed the Silent Questionary Protocol, which is still taught to investigators in 2025.
Personally investigated and helped suppress several Flamebound “cults of beauty” operating near the Dominion border.
His most famous act was the Black Hymnal Trials, where he uncovered corruption deep within the clergy itself without causing a full schism.
Legacy Even after the Theocracy’s collapse and reduction to a city-state, Vael’s methods remain the gold standard for Corvidian investigators. Modern Black-Plumes still carry a silver-inlaid reliquary modeled after his and follow many of his procedural principles. He is both revered and feared — a symbol of cold, precise divine justice.
Appearance (Historical & Symbolic) Sleek black-and-white magpie feathering with blue iridescence. One eye natural black, the other a cloudy silver-white (said to be the result of a scrying ritual). Wore a dark violet mantle with bone-white trim and always carried his Judicator’s Reliquary.
Archprophet Veydros the Iron Beak Era: Interwar & Second Emberline War (1920s–1945 A.E.) Role: Fascist dictator of the Corvidian Theocracy
A charismatic and ruthless corvid leader who seized power after the Theocracy’s partial collapse following the First Emberline War. Modeling himself as a spiritual renewer, Veydros promised to restore the Theocracy’s glory through iron discipline and absolute faith. He transformed the nation into a militarized theocratic dictatorship and allied it with the Diremarch Purity Front.
His regime was marked by aggressive rearmament, suppression of “heretical” elements, and intense propaganda. After the defeat in the Second Emberline War, Veydros disappeared during the fall of Nachtspire. His fate remains unknown, though many believe he died in the final fighting. He is remembered as the figure who delivered the Theocracy’s death blow through hubris and misplaced alliances.
