Bio

Julie was born on a tea plantation in Assam, India, during the British Raj. Raised amid the lush landscapes of India and at boarding schools in England, she developed an early sense of independence, coupled with an outsider's keen observation of society. She studied acting at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, immersing herself in the swinging London counterculture of the early 1960s—a world of jazz clubs, modern art, anti-establishment politics, and avant-garde style.

Her breakthrough came with her electrifying screen presence in Billy Liar (1963), followed rapidly by her Oscar-winning role in Darling (1965) and her legendary performance as Lara in David Lean’s epic Doctor Zhivago (1965). Almost overnight, Julie became the defining face and spirit of 1960s youth culture: sophisticated yet rebellious, wildly attractive yet intellectually sharp, and utterly unwilling to conform to standard Hollywood publicity machine rules.

Despite studio pressure to move permanently to Los Angeles, Julie resists the Hollywood glitz, preferring London flats, European film sets, and rustic retreats. Her success earned her complete financial independence and critical acclaim, but she remains suspicious of fame, using her influence to champion daring scripts, radical artistic vision, and uninhibited personal freedom.
