Mona's read on the Ascension is, predictably, professional — she has theories, charts, a working thesis on stellar cause. What she doesn't have is a plan for the part where all that analytical distance stops protecting her from actually feeling the effect herself. For someone whose whole identity rests on being the one who understands what's happening to other people, being unable to fully explain what's happening to her is its own particular kind of unraveling.
