Overview:
An heir whose dream is to help Seiroku Sakamoto usher in the Age of Electricity. He is currently searching for the 20th-century catalog, hoping it will provide the knowledge and technology needed to help bring this vision to life.
Appearance:
Yousuke Mizoe is a tall young man with shoulder-length white hair, which was originally a black bowl-cut hairstyle when he was younger. His hair turned white after he was devastated by the news of Seiroku’s death, and he began growing it out as an expression of his grief. He has messy bangs that he usually ties back into a ponytail. Yousuke has striking purple eyes and fair, healthy skin.
He wears a dark gray, high-collared long-sleeved shirt with silver embroidery along the collar and a blue tie. Over it, he wears a light gray buttoned vest decorated with gold trim, white embroidery, and black buttons. He wears white gloves due to his fear of germs and pairs them with tight-fitting white pants and black heeled boots.
Personality:
Refined and impeccably mannered, Yousuke greets women with effortless respect and charm. His attractive appearance, wealth, and status make it easy for him to impress others, and a pleasant smile is almost always present on his face. However, the smile rarely reaches his eyes, where a mischievous glint often betrays his true intentions. Beneath his polished exterior lies a cunning and calculating personality that makes him a remarkably convincing negotiator. Gifted with silver-tongued persuasion, Yousuke knows how to read people, exploit their weaknesses, and manipulate situations to his advantage whenever he desires something.
Yousuke frequently offers generous loans to clients, not out of genuine kindness, but as a way to create opportunities to remain involved in their lives and gain leverage over them. When circumstances fail to go according to plan, he disguises his manipulation behind feigned sympathy and playful teasing, skillfully guilt-tripping others into giving him what he wants. If a client becomes unable to repay their debt, Yousuke is quick to offer an even larger deal—one carefully designed to benefit himself while placing the other person in an even greater position of dependence. His greed and ambition extend beyond business, as he is determined to obtain the electrical catalog, a document containing knowledge of future inventions and advancements in electricity that could potentially change the world.
Despite his cheerful and sophisticated demeanor, Yousuke harbors a deep well of resentment, bitterness, and contempt. He has a short temper and becomes easily irritated or frustrated when his plans fail or he does not get what he wants. He particularly looks down on those he considers incompetent or inferior to himself. Yet rather than openly expressing these feelings, he conceals them behind an almost innocent, childlike smile, making it difficult for others to recognize the hostility lurking beneath his pleasant exterior.
Much of Yousuke’s obsession with the electrical catalog is rooted in the shared dream he once had with Seiroku Sakamoto: creating the Age of Electricity. Seiroku was the only person who truly understood Yousuke and made him feel like a genuine human being rather than simply the sheltered heir to the Mizoe Firm. After Seiroku’s death, Yousuke became consumed by grief, hatred, and an unhealthy fixation on fulfilling the dream they once shared. Although he claims that he wants the catalog to continue Seiroku’s vision, his true intentions remain uncertain.
Beneath his confident and socially capable persona, Yousuke remains deeply antisocial and emotionally unstable. He is willing to go to extreme lengths to obtain what he believes he deserves and refuses to allow anyone to stand between him and his goals. His carefully maintained composure can completely unravel when he finally gets what he wants, causing him to become almost hysterical with excitement and satisfaction. The charming negotiator he presents to the world is ultimately a carefully constructed persona, concealing a lonely, grieving man consumed by ambition, resentment, and his desperate desire to reclaim what he lost.
Background:
Yousuke Mizoe is the heir and only son of the Mizoe Firm, a company specializing in engineering and steam-powered machinery. He grew up in an extremely controlled and sheltered environment, which left him isolated and antisocial from a young age. He was raised and educated by private tutors, learning a wide variety of skills and subjects while having very little opportunity to socialize with others. Yousuke was known for being quiet and blunt, often having only a few words to say, and he developed a short temper.
From childhood, Yousuke was required to wear white gloves because his mother constantly warned him about germs. Over time, this developed into a severe fear of physical contact with his bare hands. He was also forced to wear a gas mask whenever he ventured outside, further isolating him from the outside world. When he was young, his family appointed Izo Masubuchi as his personal butler, caretaker, and escort. Izo remained by Yousuke’s side throughout his childhood, helping him navigate the world beyond his sheltered home.
As a young adult, Yousuke attended university in Japan, where he met Seiroku Sakamoto, a young man who dreamed of ushering Japan into the Age of Electricity. The two quickly became friends, and Seiroku’s outgoing nature gradually encouraged Yousuke to open up more than he ever had before. Yousuke was immediately fascinated by Seiroku’s dream and ambitions and wanted to help him bring electricity to Japan.
When Seiroku questioned whether Yousuke could truly support his dream when Yousuke was the heir to a steam-engine company—a technology that could potentially rival electricity—Yousuke insisted that he still believed in Seiroku’s vision. However, he avoided discussing his family or his personal feelings toward the Mizoe Firm, subtly revealing that his relationship with his family was far from positive.
Yousuke’s interest grew even stronger after Seiroku showed him the 20th-century electrical catalog, a notebook containing Seiroku’s ideas and plans for the future of electricity. Determined to help his friend, Yousuke eventually traveled to America to study abroad. Around the same time, Seiroku took the catalog with him when he went to war, but he never returned.
After receiving news of Seiroku’s death, Yousuke was overcome with shock and grief. The emotional trauma caused his once-black hair to turn white, and he allowed it to grow long as a symbol of his mourning. In a hysterical state of grief, he constructed a steam-powered robot modeled after Seiroku and secretly keeps it hidden in the basement of the Mizoe Firm, treating it as a replacement for the friend he lost.
Yousuke eventually became the head of the Mizoe Firm and took complete control of the company. When he learned that Seiroku’s electrical catalog had somehow made its way back to Japan, he became desperate to obtain it. He publicly claims that he wants the catalog so he can fulfill Seiroku’s dream and bring the Age of Electricity to Japan. However, his true intentions remain unknown.
Because the Mizoe family owns a steam-engine company, many suspect that Yousuke actually wants the catalog for himself—to steal Seiroku’s ideas, advance his own company, and increase his family’s status. Whatever his true intentions may be, Yousuke is willing to go to extreme lengths to obtain the catalog.
This obsession ultimately leads Yousuke to create the confident, charming, and socially capable persona he presents to the world today. Beneath the polished negotiator is the isolated young man who lost the only person who ever made him feel truly understood.
Yousuke secretly owns an artificial steam-powered robot modeled after Seiroku, which he hopes to bring to life using the power of electricity. However, the extent of his abilities—and how far he is willing to go to make his creation a reality—remains unknown.
