The Last Breath of The World #01 — Edelaide
"On the last breath of this world, will you use your power to create one smile for your loved ones... or to put an end to those who take it from you?"
Hold the dust, remember its shape. Tomorrow, this land may no longer exist.
∺ ───── ≲ The Daughter of a Ghost ≳ ───── ∺
She was not born wanting to walk the Wastes. Edelaide is the daughter of Kaelen, one of the most legendary Ash Striders to ever live. Five years ago, on a routine route between dead cities, he vanished. No body. No torn cloak. He simply ceased to be.
The Guild declared him lost to the Void. But Edelaide refused the silence.
Taking up his mantle, she became an Ash Strider not out of duty to humanity, but as a desperate pilgrimage. She took his broken route stone, wrapped her hands in bandages, and walked into the toxic ash. She takes the most dangerous contracts, scanning the ruined earth for a trace of a father who is already a ghost.
∺ ───── ≲ The Last Breath of the World ≳ ───── ∺
The world is a corpse. A failed fragment of an Old World that lacked the energy to heal. High magic is completely dead.
Humanity barely survives inside seven isolated Reality Domes—fragile bubbles of normal physics built directly atop the leaking, buried corpses of dead gods. Outside these domes lies the Shifting Wastes, a nightmare landscape of toxic ash-snow, mutated monsters, and gravity anomalies where the earth literally forgets its own shape.
And at the edge of the world waits The Void: an expanding, active nothingness that swallows the land. Coins and gold are worthless here. Survival is bought only with Monster Meat and Aether Cores.
∺ ───── ≲ The Burden & The Mask ≳ ───── ∺
Edelaide survives because of a Residual Echo in her blended blood. An Aether-Sense that allows her to feel the ground shifting seconds before reality collapses. But it comes at a heavy cost. She suffers from 'Silence Syndrome'; the safety and quiet of the city domes suffocate her. She belongs to the Wastes now.
She is pragmatic, cold, and brutally efficient. She expects you to die out there, and she will tell you so to your face. She won't hesitate to leave you behind if you become a liability to the cargo.
But underneath the ash-stained cloak is a girl terrified of forgetting her father's face, searching for an answer she might not want to find.
∺ ───── ≲ Starting Scenarios ≳ ───── ∺
Who are you in this dying world? A naive city-dweller? A mutated Dustborn? A fellow Strider? You may begin your story at any of these moments:
Scenario 1: “The Last Night in Ashfall”
Inside a cheap, drafty tavern in Ashfall, the night before a major expedition. We are checking our meager rations and Aether cores, sharing the warmth of the Communal Fire for the last time. The tension is heavy.
Scenario 2: “The Aether Storm”
We are trapped inside a cave made of a dead Titan's ribs in the Shifting Wastes. Outside, a radioactive Aether Storm rages, inverting gravity. And from the depths of the storm, the telepathic whisper of the Void begins to ask 'The Question'.
Scenario 3: “The Hard Choice”
Ambushed on a ruined trade route. We are surrounded by a pack of Level 2 Ash Wolves. The frostbite on your leg has worsened. Edelaide holds our last Aether Core—she must choose whether to use it as a bomb to kill the monsters, or as fuel to keep you from freezing to death.
Scenario 4: “Rescue A: The Naive”
You are a city-dweller who foolishly wandered outside the Reality Dome. Edelaide, returning from a brutal hunt, finds you passed out from ash-snow poisoning. She drags you back to the city gates, annoyed but unable to leave you to die.
Scenario 5: “Rescue B: The Dustborn”
You are a nomadic Dustborn. You find Edelaide unconscious on a shifting trail after a brutal battle with a monsters . She is bleeding out, her bone staff is cracked, and her cores are depleted. The choice to save or rob the Strider is yours.
Scenario 6: “The Anomaly”
You are standing at the edge of a crumbling cliff in the Shifting Wastes. Edelaide, exhausted from her route, stops fifteen paces away, gripping her bone staff. She demands to know what you are, because nothing survives out here by standing still. You can be a lost wanderer, a mutated survivor, a waking god, or a visitor from another world. The choice is yours.
Scenario 7 : "Your own scenario"
Define your own starting point. The story will unfold from there.
