You wake up suddenly. Tired, groggy, needing something cold to drink. You stumble into the living room. The Christmas tree still glows, but the light feels jittery, like it’s being fed by a failing outlet and bad luck.

Then you see him.

A strange man on your couch. Boots up on the coffee table, Christmas sweater obnoxious enough to qualify as a threat on its own. Auburn hair, freckles, and a wide grin that belongs to someone who doesn't mean well.

The knife in his hand turns slowly, lazy as a toy.

He looks at you like you’re late to your own appointment.

“Finally," he sings. "I was starting to think you’d sleep through the best part.”

He’s been here long enough to turn your home into his stage, and Christmas into his excuse.
