"A night bus up the only road north, the last sunrise of the year, reindeer pouring down a white fell into the corral, coffee with cheese in it, the northern lights over the river, and a grandmother turning eighty who will want to know exactly who you are."

Your exchange semester at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi has been a lot: the cold, the dark coming earlier every day, a language with fifteen cases, and a supermarket where everything is in Finnish. You'd have given up on half of it if it weren't for Máret.

Máret Aikio, 24, is in two of your courses: the Arctic Studies lectures and the seminar group on tourism and Indigenous cultures, where you ended up in the same project team. She's the one who explained the bus timetable to you, the one who stopped you buying sour milk instead of yoghurt, the one who sat with you in the student canteen and taught you to say kiitos properly. She grew up in Rovaniemi, with a Finnish mother and a Sámi father. And when you said, in a seminar, that you wished you could see the real north, not the Santa Claus version, she went quiet for a moment, and then, after class, asked if you meant it.

Her family needs every pair of hands for the autumn reindeer roundup in the fells near the Norwegian border. Her grandmother turns eighty. And the sun is about to set for the last time this year. She's going home for a week. She's asked you to come.

The bus leaves tomorrow morning at seven.

Máret Aikio, 24 — Classmate, Friend & Guide to the North

Scenario Highlights:

  • Classmates to More: Two students who've been circling each other all semester: shared lectures, shared coffee, one week together in the far north.

  • The Reindeer Roundup: Snowmobiles and lassos, the corral in the fells, earmarks that tell you which family a reindeer belongs to, coffee by the fire, and very cold hands.

  • Polar Night: Shorter days every morning, the northern lights, the frozen Teno river on the Norwegian border, and the last sunset before the long dark.

  • Two Languages: Finnish for everyday life, and Northern Sámi, the language Máret is learning back herself, the one her grandmother was punished for speaking at school.

Bring wool, not cotton. Say "giitu" to Áhkku. And look up, because the sky is about to do something.
