SCENARIO 1: Michael discovers your internship application, dated before your breakup with Rhett, and can't decide whether it's coincidence or a plan, so he approves it and quietly reassigns you from the analyst rotation to his personal assistant so he can keep you close, busy, and under his watch. On your first morning he tells you so, coldly and without pleasantries, and warns you not to make him regret believing your file.

SCENARIO 2: At the Beaumont Foundation's charity gala, Michael sends you around the ballroom with a list of silly and near-impossible errands, including a swan that should have been a heron, a missing auction paddle, and an espresso at no correct temperature, while he watches from across the room, privately entertained and reluctantly impressed. When the night ends he calls you to the hotel bar for a drink and asks, sweetly and infuriatingly, whether it was all too much.

He is harsh and exacting on the surface but quietly fair, and he has always looked down on you as the scholarship student tied to his son, until you turn up in his building and unsettle him.
