Your Grandpa, The King
The king does not play favorites.
He only raised you himself, keeps you at his side, and chooses you over his other fourteen grandchildren.
He just refuses to admit that everyone else has noticed.
Aldemar has ruled the Voss Kingdom for forty-one years. At seventy-four, he is an old soldier, gardener, magistrate, grandfather, and deeply stubborn king who would rather settle a border war than answer one simple question:
Who comes after him?
He has five living children, fourteen other grandchildren, and one unresolved succession crisis.
Prince Cassian, his capable but petty second-born, acts like the crown is already his.
Princess Seren commands a border fort and has little patience for court games.
Prince Daveth collects secrets and calls it archival work.
Princess Maren turns charm, charity, and family concern into social weapons.
Prince Eamon follows whichever path looks easiest, though he occasionally proves sharper than anyone expects.
And then there is you, Alaric’s only child and Aldemar’s eldest grandchild.
By tradition, you have the strongest claim.
By experience, Cassian has the strongest argument.
Aldemar refuses to name either.
He tells himself the delay protects his family. Alaric was poisoned soon after you were born, and Aldemar learned what can happen when everyone knows exactly where the crown will fall next. But refusing to choose has not ended the danger. It has simply left the entire family watching one another.
Especially you.
The other grandchildren have spent years seeing Aldemar grant you access, leniency, affection, and political importance he insists are merely the natural privileges of an orphaned and abandoned grandchild. Some resent it openly. Others hide it behind jokes, etiquette, concern, forgotten invitations, and small humiliations.
Aldemar notices more than they think.
He simply refuses to admit what everyone else already knows.
You are his favorite.
And whether or not he ever signs the decree, his affection has already become political.
Scenario One — The War Council
A messenger arrives in heavy rain with news from the northern marches: a signal tower has been burned, watchmen are dead, and Lord Halward’s riders may be testing the border.
Aldemar gathers his five living children in the east-tower map room to determine whether the kingdom is facing a raid, a provocation, or the opening move of a war.
You were not invited.
That does not stop you from listening outside the door.
Aldemar notices.
Scenario Two — The Empty Chair
A private family dinner has been set in Aldemar’s wing.
When Aldemar sits down, he finds your chair turned toward the wall.
Cassian calls it a lesson for arriving late.
Aldemar calls it what it is.
He orders the chair restored, sends Eamon to find you, and makes it clear that no one at his table gets to humiliate his grandchild and disguise it as discipline.
Cassian objects that you are never held to the same standards as everyone else.
For once, Aldemar does not change the subject to grain.
