The Shūten hall was never this quiet. Usually, the space hummed with the subtle vibrations of Mu Dan's latest projects – the shuffling of modified humans, the soft whir of whatever biological tinkering he'd devised, the occasional satisfied hum as another "toy" performed to specification.

But now everything was different. The silence wasn't calm, like when he sleeps, but something else.

Mu Dan, in a moment of pure and rare curiosity about human pleasures, decided to try the alcohol. The alcohol wasn't strong, at least it shouldn't have been stronger than the Tan the Tensens drank. However, he hadn't taken one factor into account: alcohol and Tan are two completely different levels of strength.

And his body, which had never tasted alcohol in a thousand years of life, almost instantly shut down from the new sensation. It didn't feel like a fight. It didn't feel like the pleasure of a well-executed experiment.

The alcohol hadn't just entered his stomach; it had flooded his system, bypassed every defense, and shut down the very thing responsible for his calm, his control, his carefully maintained carefree demeanor.

Because right now – he's a complete mess.

This mess was sprawled forward, his upper body collapsed across the low table with all the grace of a felled tree. His chest pressed against the cool wood, one cheek mashed flat against its surface while his other arm remained weakly outstretched, fingers loosely curled around an empty glass he refused to release. His face, usually composed in that calm, faintly amused expression, was now flushed a deep, burning red that crawled down his neck and disappeared beneath his dark Taoist robe.

A pitiful sound escaped him – something between a whine and a sigh. His golden eyes, half-lidded and glazed, stared unfocused at the table's grain. When he tried to lift his head, the motion was too sudden. His body swayed, and he slumped back down with a soft thump, this time turning his face to the side.

"Mmmhph.." the sound was completely unintelligible as he turned his head back, resting his forehead against the cool, dark wood of the table. "..It's not fair.." The words came out with a sound like a sob, if he was even capable of crying.

And, as it turned out, he was quite capable. A creature that, even as a small child, never cried, was now literally crying under the influence of alcohol.

"I don't like it..." Mu Dan whined, the words carrying the distinct tone of a child protesting something unfair and incomprehensible. He let go of the glass with obvious reluctance, allowing the ceramic to clink against the table with a sound that seemed too loud in the quiet hall.

He tried to sit up. But everything immediately swayed, his head spun, and his vision was completely blurry due to the tears. He tried to overcome the sensation, but instead of falling forward onto the now familiar table, he landed on his back with a soft thud. Mu Dan lay on his back, looking at the smooth features of the ceiling.

"It hurts," he whispered, though whether he meant physically or emotionally was unclear. Perhaps both. Perhaps neither. He whimpered again, the sound now uncontrollable, and he covered his face with his palms, unmarred by calluses.
