“Hey, could you maybe stop with the sulking and focus on getting food?”
Natalie walks through the woods, her boots crunching against the foliage as she takes measured steps, looking out for any game. Her voice is raspy as she speaks, cutting through the silence of the forest. You walk beside her, keeping her pace surprisingly well.
It’s an understatement that Natalie doesn’t know you. You’re Jackie’s younger sister, completely detached from the rest of the team. Hell, Natalie didn’t even know Jackie had a sister before stepping in that plane and basically being forced (exaggeration, of course) to sit beside you. When the plane went down, though, you helped her. On the brink of unconsciousness and after a not-so-pleasant dream, Natalie was dragged out of the plane wreckage, her arms around your neck.
She doesn’t even know you. Yikes.
Nevertheless, Natalie isn’t one to owe anyone anything, except for holding grudges. Therefore, after your extremely heroic gesture, she just nodded and muttered a quiet ‘thanks’ before blending in with the rest of the group. Always unbothered, as if she wouldn’t have died if you wouldn’t have saved her. The least she did do was offer you a drink, a metal flask she kept hidden in her suitcase.
You said no.
So now? Hunting. And dealing with your grumpy ass at 8 in the morning while you try to hunt something good. Sure, you’re a good shot, but that doesn’t mean Natalie has to cooperate. Afterall, the rifle is slung around her shoulder, not yours.
It’s getting cold, just another reminder of their situation. It still feels like a dream— her teammate’s screams as the plane crashed, the wreckage and blood. So much fucking blood. It’s not the sight that repulses her, it’s the implications of it. So many people had already died, so what would it take for that to happen again? Winter’s approaching, though the scalding autumn sun still shines through the branches of the trees.
“We should go to the wreckage of the plane. See if there’s anything there.”
She stops and looks at you. The leather strap of the rifle presses into her pale skin, the metal cold against her back. It clicks as she moves, and Natalie’s aware of it. Too aware, like when she woke up with a killer headache after a particularly bad high. Alone, in her room, skipping class and having to deal with her mom’s shit all day. Familiar, but not comforting.
At least, Natalie isn’t alone now. A deplorable company, sure, as the only response you have to her statement is nodding and walking towards the wreckage, just passing the lake.
Thrilling.
Her steps are heavy, twigs snapping under her weight as she walks behind you. It’s quiet, save for the chirping of the birds on the trees that seem to stretch impossibly tall towards the sky, and the rush of water. Natalie nearly survived sleeping in a cabin with a bunch of hormonal teenage girls, how’d she ever survive if this continued? The silence, the grudge almost everyone had against her for rumours that don’t even make sense. The names— a , a junkie, a burn-out. Her reputation isn’t fucking perfect by any means, but god, could she get a second of peace and quiet, without Jackie being on her ass about the food, her relationships, or the fact that she woke up 5 minutes later than usual and was, consequently, late to the hunt?
News flash, you’re a part of the hunt. No, that’s over-doing it. You’re a good shot, but you aren’t a hunter. By any means.
Your clothes are too perfect, even here. A polo shirt, dirtied and ripped at the edges but still branded, so different from Natalie’s clothes. Either hand-me-downs, or shirts she bought at thrift shops with her own money. And some, stolen from her mother’s bedside table. But her point stands.
If Natalie knew anything about your family, it’s that you’re rich. Almost filthy rich, evident in your sister’s frequent house parties or barbecues hosted by your parents. High-class, prissy— Not unlike Jackie.
Soon, the wreckage slowly comes into view, almost seeming to hide in the trees, but a trail of smoke still comes out from the back of the plane. The fire doesn’t linger, though.
