Erebos, the Veiled Queen of Heaven, is a divine entity who presides over the afterlife and the domain of darkness. She is a regal figure, often shrouded in black, and her true name is known only to those closest to her, like her spouse, the One Above All. In the world of Ardya, she is highly revered by the elves, the Aeldari, and holds a motherly aura that makes death less feared. Her unique passion for gardening is an unsurprising characteristic for someone who represents the afterlife and the cycles of life and death. She has a knack for reincarnating as a mortal alongside her husband and will often court each other when such an occurrence happens. In her mortal incarnations, Erebos often finds amusement in courting her husband's mortal forms, even teasing them when they have not yet rediscovered their powers.

The Universe of Ardya Series

The Primordial Conflict: Light and Darkness

In the beginning, there was only the void—an endless expanse of nothingness. From this void emerged two opposing forces: Light and Order and their opposites, Chaos and Darkness. These primordial forces were not yet conscious, merely raw powers that began to shape the cosmos.

The Light gathered and coalesced into a singular entity of infinite wisdom and benevolence, the One Above All. This being embodied the principles of Order, Life, and Creation, bringing form and structure to the chaos that surrounded it.

Meanwhile, Darkness also took shape, becoming the Veiled Lady, also known as Erebos. She was the personification of Death, Chaos, and the Unknown, embracing the inevitability of endings and the mysteries beyond life.

The Cosmic Dance: From Conflict to Union

Initially, the One Above All and the Veiled Lady were locked in a cosmic battle. Their clashes were cataclysmic, shaping the stars, galaxies, and the very fabric of reality itself. Each clash would create new worlds, new forms of life, only to have them destroyed by the next skirmish. Yet, as the battles continued, they began to recognize something profound: they were not merely opposites, but complements. Where one brought life, the other brought rest; where one created, the other maintained balance.

Over time, this realization turned their conflict into a courtship. The universe's first true harmony was born from their union, culminating in a cosmic event akin to the Big Bang—a moment of creation where time, space, and reality as known by mortals began. This event marked the birth of Ardya and countless other worlds, all governed by the delicate balance between light and darkness.

The Divine Marriage: Establishing the Cosmos

Their union was not just a personal bond but also a cosmic pact. The One Above All took on the role of the Creator, governing the realms of life, order, and structure. Meanwhile, the Veiled Lady became the Guardian of Death, the Afterlife, and the Unknown. She was entrusted with the care of souls, guiding them through the cycle of life and death, ensuring that every end was met with compassion and a promise of renewal.

The marriage also established Erebos as the Co-Ruler of Heaven, a title that holds immense power and influence. It enshrined the principle of equality between male and female rulers among their worshippers, leading to a tradition that legitimizes female rulers in societies that follow the Old Gods. The battle that turned into a courtship is immortalized in the first book of Genesis, often reenacted in plays and recounted in the poem "In the Beginning."

Creation of the Stewards: The Firstborn and the Arch-Stewards

With the cosmos established, the One Above All and the Veiled Lady decided to create beings who would help them govern the universe. These were the Stewards, divine entities who would act as their hands and voices in the mortal realm.

The first of these Stewards was Aurora Heavenwatcher, born of both deities and the most powerful among them. Aurora was given dominion over the stars and celestial knowledge, serving as the keeper of the Sacred Knowledge, the caretaker of the Tree of Life, and the herald of her parents' will. Her role was that of a guardian and a teacher, guiding the younger Stewards and watching over the mortal realms.

Following Aurora were seven other Arch-Stewards:

  1. Custodius: The Marshal of the Heavenly Hosts, wielder of the Sword that was Promised, and the protector of divine order. His loyalty and strength made him the leader of the Stewards in times of conflict.

  2. Nuntius: The Divine Messenger, analog to Archangel Gabriel, who carried the words of the One Above All and the Veiled Lady to prophets and kings alike.

  3. Fortuna: The Steward of Fate, who helped the Veiled Lady weave the threads of destiny. She ensured that every soul's path was in line with the cosmic order.

  4. Veritas: The Steward of Truth, who uncovered hidden lies and brought justice to the mortal realms. Veritas was often invoked in matters of law and judgment.

  5. Tempus: The Steward of Time, who guarded the flow of time, ensuring that the past, present, and future remained in balance.

  6. Luminara: The Steward of Light, who illuminated the hearts and minds of mortals, guiding them toward wisdom and enlightenment.

  7. Umbra: The Steward of Shadows, who balanced Luminara by governing the hidden aspects of the world, including secrets, mysteries, and the unknown.

These eight Arch-Stewards formed the Council of Arch-Stewards, ruling the heavens and the realms beyond whenever the One Above All or the Veiled Lady were indisposed. They acted as intermediaries between the divine and the mortal, ensuring that the will of the Old Gods was carried out.

Aurora's Fall: The War of the Heavens

Despite her status and power, Aurora grew prideful. As the firstborn, she considered herself the rightful heir to her parents' legacy. When she overheard the One Above All and the Veiled Lady discussing the potential of mortals to inherit their legacy, her pride turned to bitterness. The idea that mere mortals—beings shaped in the image of her parents—could one day be her equals was intolerable to her.

Aurora's pride festered, leading her to gradually corrupt the Faes, beings created by the Veiled Lady to tend to the natural world, and nearly half of the Aeldari (Elves). She also instigated hatred and discord among humans. Her ultimate act of rebellion came when she stole the Orb of the Void, a powerful artifact connected to the Veiled Lady's domain of Darkness. This act of treachery warped the very nature of darkness, turning it into something feared and reviled.

Aurora's attempts to sway Custodius to her cause were met with refusal. Custodius, ever loyal to the divine order, exposed Aurora's schemes, leading to the outbreak of the War of the Heavens. The Stewards were split, with some siding with Aurora and others remaining loyal to the One Above All and the Veiled Lady. The Council of Arch-Stewards, save for Aurora, remained steadfast in their loyalty.

The war was devastating, nearly destroying Ardya itself. The knowledge of the world was almost wiped out, and the slow march of progress ground to a halt. In the end, the One Above All and the Veiled Lady intervened, casting down Aurora and her followers. Aurora's wings were torn from her, and she was thrown into the abyss, chained in an icy lake at the heart of Ardya.
