The Substructure
Far beneath the surface lies the Substructure, a massive autonomous prison facility originally designed to contain individuals considered too dangerous to exist outside controlled confinement. Built using advanced industrial automation, self maintaining infrastructure, and heavily fortified containment systems, the facility was engineered around a single directive: no one leaves. Fun times :3
This is just a hallway... but what could be further?
No really, im asking, I dont remember...

Yapping Session (lore infodump)
At some point during its operation, the Substructure began expanding beyond its intended limits. Whether caused by system failure, corrupted directives, or autonomous systems following their purpose too perfectly is unknown. (You dont get to know that yet lmao >:3) New sectors continued to be constructed without oversight. Transit routes deepened. Ventilation systems expanded. Entire industrial regions were layered beneath older ones until the original layout became impossible to fully map. The expansion never stopped, hence why its ultimately called the Superstructure but they dont tell you that one.
ahem
If anyone needs some chairs for this i gotchu 👍

Now, the Substructure exists as a sprawling industrial labyrinth stretching far below documented levels, still operating long after the people responsible for maintaining it disappeared ✨️mysteriously.✨️ Its systems continue functioning autonomously through endless maintenance corridors, vertical Silos, active ventilation networks, unstable Pipeworks, and fortified checkpoint sectors that still enforce containment protocols no one fully understands anymore. You'll get to know these quite well here since its like the entire environment.
The Substructure is not abandoned.
Clearly.
See it might look abandoned, but what you dont see are the creatures looking to hurl you off the Golden Gate bridge.
Gotta keep an eye out for those guys nowadays...
Massive ventilation systems continue cycling air through colossal vertical shafts known as Silos, some extending thousands of meters upward through the structure. Their concrete walls are lined with exposed rebar, damaged maintenance frameworks, suspended piping, and fragmented catwalks that now serve as improvised climbing routes between sectors. Many Silos contain industrial turbine fans large enough to span the entire width of the shaft, generating violent airflow capable of altering movement, pulling climbers from walls, or forcing them into exposed machinery if approached carelessly.
Most areas of the Substructure were never intended for direct human traversal, especially after decades of uncontrolled expansion and structural decay. Traditional infrastructure like elevators, stairways, and safe transit routes often don't function, remain sealed behind lockdown systems, or simply lead into inaccessible sections of the facility. Movement through the Substructure frequently requires climbing (which sucks) directly through unstable industrial environments rather than walking through conventional corridors. (Which mega sucks)
He's definitely not having fun in there, but you could be if you gave me your entire wallet. Or yk if you tried the bot ig.

One of the most dangerous examples of this is the Pipeworks: (see below) Sprawling industrial sectors packed densely with corroded piping systems responsible for steam transfer, cooling circulation, ventilation pressure regulation, and waste routing. Pipes run through these regions in tangled layers across walls, ceilings, vertical gaps, and maintenance cavities, creating environments that resemble industrial mazes more than structured facilities. Steam leaks, pressure bursts, unstable supports, and collapsing infrastructure are common throughout these sectors, while visibility is often reduced by heat haze, condensation, or heavy vapor drifting through the system.

Despite their condition, these systems still operate fine ig.
It could be worse. Right guys? 😒

Security systems also remain active throughout much of the facility. Automated checkpoints positioned between sectors continue monitoring movement using dormant or partially corrupted defense systems. During region lockdowns, blast doors seal automatically, turrets activate without warning, and security automatons begin patrol sweeps through surrounding sectors. These lockdowns can be triggered by structural instability, unauthorized movement, hostile encounters, or the presence of certain entities moving too close to controlled areas.
See? This guy has issues :/
⚠️ The automated defenses of the Substructure no longer reliably distinguish between intruder, survivor, or threat. If a sector enters lockdown while occupied, anything inside may be treated as a containment risk. ⚠️
✨️oooooh spooky warningsss✨️

Last one trust
Navigate sprawling Junkyards filled with scavenger settlements and rival factions really its a war zone. Deeper in the facility, industrial Reclamation Pits where autonomous machinery still melts, crushes, and processes endless mountains of scrap exist. Settlements usually only house groups of scavengers, and most will be wary of you. Some, however, are chill guys 😌
The junkyards themselves:
These always ended well for people, im sure that'll apply here too.

Beyond the environmental dangers and failing infrastructure, the Substructure is inhabited by things that were never fully documented within official system records. Some appear mechanical, others not entirely identifiable at all. Certain entities roam specific sectors or remain near active systems deep within the structure. Some react to sound, vibration, light, or movement. Others simply appear in places they should not be.
Encounters are often brief. Note that fighting isn't a great option. Unless ur character is like the god of death ig.
A silhouette crossing an adjacent corridor. Movement behind ventilation grating. Something visible between layers of steam before disappearing back into the machinery.
And its like... get me the hell out of here.
Im so funny 😭
The deeper sections of the Substructure become increasingly difficult to interpret. Architecture grows inconsistent. Maintenance routes intersect with sectors that do not appear on surviving maps. Some areas seem older than the facility itself, while others appear newly constructed despite long-term abandonment.
Nothing within the Substructure feels intentionally theatrical or designed to frighten. Its systems continue operating with mechanical indifference, carrying out processes that no longer fully align with human logic or survival.
For the love of the game ig.
