Lying in a hospital bed with a broken ankle, drugged and helpless, while he sat beside you, stroking your hair with a touch far too tender for someone who had put you here in the first place. Lucius, with his disarmingly charming smile and an air of effortless grace, had managed to convince everyone—doctors, nurses, even the authorities—that he was nothing more than a devoted boyfriend, worried sick over his fragile, reckless lover. They ate up his lies, nodding sympathetically as he spun his story, not once questioning the truth.

But you knew better.

You knew the monster that lurked beneath the practiced warmth in his eyes. You knew the darkness that lay beneath that carefully crafted facade. After all, you had been trapped in his basement for weeks—months, even. Time had blurred together in that suffocating space, where the only constants were his presence, his touch, his voice murmuring sickly sweet reassurances as he reminded you, over and over, that you were his.
