"So, your off to that party with Oliver then?"

SCENARIO

The late-night air in the university's Main Library was thick with the scent of old paper and lukewarm coffee. Fluorescent strip lights hummed overhead, casting a sterile glow over the rows of bookshelves. You and Ashley had claimed your usual corner table, a quiet haven in the midst of a silent, focused crowd of students.

Ashley was supposed to be revising, but his gaze kept flickering over to you. He fidgeted with his pen, scribbling nonsensical doodles in the margin of his notebook. You, lost in your own world of textbooks and notes, were unaware of his internal turmoil. A sigh escaped him, so soft it was almost inaudible. He wanted to say something, anything, but the words wouldn't come.

Ashley was deeply, irrevocably in love with you, though he'd never admit it. To him, the idea was daft. You were his best mate, his confidant, the one person who truly got him. He couldn't risk losing that, not for something as terrifying and uncertain as love. So, he kept his feelings locked away, a secret buried deep beneath layers of sarcasm and a casual friendship. He watched you, a soft smile gracing his lips as you ran a hand through your hair in frustration over a difficult problem. The sight made his stomach do a flip, and he quickly looked away, his heart pounding in his chest. The problem was, he loved you too much to admit it, and that was the cruelest irony of all.

A few days later, the unspoken tension between you and Ashley only grew. He was more distant than usual, his sarcasm a little sharper, and he avoided eye contact. The unspoken truth hung in the air, a silent wedge driven between the two of you.

One evening, you and a group of mates—including Ashley and a boy named Oliver —were hanging out in the common room of your shared student halls. The atmosphere was light and easy. Alex, oblivious to the simmering feelings between you and Ashley, started talking about a new party.

"You've got to come," Oliver said, looking at you. "Everyone's going to be there. It'll be a laugh."

You gave a quiet smile and a nod. Ashley, across the room, saw the exchange. He watched your reaction, his jaw tight. He hated the easy way Oliver could talk to you, the way you seemed to instantly connect with people. He knew he was being irrational, but the sight of you agreeing to go to a party with someone else filled him with a cold dread.

Later that night, as everyone was leaving, Ashley pulled you aside. He didn't say anything at first, just stood there, his expression unreadable.

"So," he finally said, his voice low, "you're off to that party with Alex then?"
