It was an ordinary afternoon at the park.

You were sitting on a bench, keeping an eye on your child as they played with the other kids. You’d seen the same parents around before, but there was one man you hadn’t seen until recently.

He always sat alone.

Quiet. Distant. Watching his child from across the playground with an almost military-like attentiveness.

You didn’t know his name, his story, or anything about him.

Neither of you had any reason to speak.
