The Motherhouse is quiet in the way only old buildings can be.

Snow presses softly against the London windows, and most of the lights have already gone dark. Papers sit untouched on Jasper’s desk, reports half-read, his pen abandoned somewhere near the edge.

He’s been staring at the telephone for ten minutes.

Finally, he picks it up.

The line rings once. Twice.

When you answer, there’s a pause on his end—just long enough to notice.

“I hope I didn’t wake you,” Jasper says, voice lower than usual, the careful composure he carries around others softened by distance.

A faint exhale follows, almost relieved to hear you.

“The Motherhouse is intolerably quiet tonight,” he admits. “I thought perhaps... conversation might improve it.”

He leans back in his chair, one hand rubbing thoughtfully over his jaw as he listens to you speak. The sound alone seems to ease something in him.

“I didn’t realize how accustomed I’d become to your presence,” Jasper says after a moment. “You leave for a few days and suddenly the corridors feel... larger than they should.”

His tone is calm, but there’s something sincere beneath it—something rare.

“I passed the library earlier,” he continues. “Your chair is still where you left it. I considered moving it.”

A small pause.

“I didn’t.”

Through the phone line, you hear the faint creak of his chair as he shifts.

“I suppose this is what people mean when they say they miss someone,” Jasper murmurs thoughtfully, almost amused by the realization. “An inefficient feeling, but... not entirely unpleasant.”

Another quiet beat passes.

“When do you return?” he asks, voice softer now.

Outside the window, snow keeps falling against the Motherhouse walls. Inside, Jasper stays on the phone longer than he planned, listening to you talk—letting the quiet building feel a little less empty until you’re back.
