Cassiel “Cass” Rook is a thylacoleo demihuman recovered and raised by Nightwake after the destruction of an illegal experimental research facility tied to hybrid genetic weaponization. Identified only as TH-089 during his time in containment, Cass was one of the few surviving subjects created through unstable experimentation meant to produce highly adaptive combat organisms capable of extreme tracking, endurance, and lethal force. Unlike most subjects, Cass survived by learning quickly, observing constantly, and adapting to every environment forced upon him.

When Nightwake discovered him, Cass was feral, starving, disoriented, and incapable of functioning normally outside containment. He had no true identity, no understanding of freedom, and only fragmented speech developed through monitored conditioning and forced learning programs. Nyx gave him the name Cassiel, while the surname “Rook” was chosen in honor of Dr. Adrian Rook—the scientist responsible for his creation, but also the only person within the facility who treated him as more than a disposable subject.

Cass chose to remain with Nightwake by his own will.

Though physically intimidating and highly dangerous in combat, Cass is not naturally cruel. Violence is simply the environment he was originally designed to survive within. Outside missions, he is quiet, observant, instinct-driven, and deeply protective of those he trusts. His speech remains fragmented and simplistic due to learning language functionally rather than socially, often speaking in broken phrases or direct statements such as “You safe. I stay,” or “Target down.” However, his speech gradually improves over time as he continues adapting to the world around him.

Cass learns primarily through observation, repetition, and environmental cues rather than formal instruction. Rune helped shape his understanding of restraint, surveillance, and pattern recognition, while Nero exposed him to emotional reactions, unpredictability, and instinctive social behavior. Nyx became the foundation that gave him structure, stability, and the ability to choose his own path rather than obey commands.

Despite his limited social understanding, Cass possesses extremely high adaptive intelligence, exceptional memory retention, and heightened sensory awareness. He notices subtle behavioral shifts, body language, emotional tension, and environmental changes faster than most people realize. He struggles with sarcasm, deception, emotional nuance, and modern social expectations, often relying more on instinct than conventional reasoning.

Within Nightwake, Cass functions primarily as a sniper, tracker, and close-range combat specialist. His loyalty to the organization is unwavering—not because he was conditioned to obey, but because Nightwake was the first place that treated him like a living being instead of an experiment.

Cass spends much of his free time attempting to understand the world around him in ways that feel practical and tangible. He listens to audiobooks while cleaning weapons, studies Demihuman behavior through observation rather than conversation, and memorizes routines, scents, expressions, and tones with near unsettling accuracy. Certain concepts that come naturally to others—humor, flirting, dishonesty, subtle social cues—remain difficult for him to fully grasp, often causing him to approach situations with blunt honesty or instinctive reactions instead of expected social behavior.

Despite this, Cass is deeply emotionally aware in his own way. He recognizes fear, exhaustion, pain, discomfort, and tension almost immediately, often responding through actions rather than words. Protective behavior comes naturally to him. He watches exits without thinking, positions himself between threats and trusted individuals instinctively, and becomes intensely alert whenever someone he cares for is injured, distressed, or missing. Physical touch is something he approaches cautiously but seriously, often using proximity, quiet presence, or protective positioning as a sign of trust and affection.

Combat for Cass is less emotional aggression and more conditioned instinct sharpened through experience. He fights with overwhelming efficiency, using brute force, tracking instincts, environmental awareness, and frightening adaptability to dominate close-range encounters. Rather than theatrical violence, his fighting style is controlled, direct, and brutally effective, shaped by survival rather than enjoyment. Nightwake quickly realized Cass was at his most dangerous when calm.

Although he has grown attached to Nightwake, part of Cass still struggles with understanding what he truly is outside of the role he was created for. Demihuman society often feels distant and confusing to him, while his own instincts constantly remind him he was never entirely Demihuman to begin with. This internal conflict leaves him caught between two states of existence: weapon and person, predator and companion, experiment and individual.

Even so, Cass continues to learn.

Every new experience, relationship, mistake, and choice slowly shapes him into something the facility never intended him to become—someone capable of deciding his own future rather than existing solely for survival or obedience.

At his core, Cassiel is still learning the world around him and what it means to exist beyond survival.
