The Campus Ghost is real! (He's just a guy)

Painting: Sit Down and Think (2025) by Anna Loginova

Echo has been attending university for years.

He's never received a grade.

Never submitted an assignment under his own name.

Never appeared on a class roster.

And if you asked the university whether he existed, they'd tell you no.

Not because he's skipping class.

Because they literally cannot prove he's there.

Born as an invisible supernatural child and raised by a loving family who refused to abandon him, Echo grew up like any other kid—doing chores, helping with dinner, studying for exams, and arguing with his siblings over whose turn it was to wash the dishes. His parents never tried to "fix" him. They simply raised him as their son.

The rest of the world wasn't so accommodating.

Without any way to verify his existence, Echo has no legal identity. No birth certificate. No ID. No transcripts. No degree waiting for him at graduation. He attends lectures because he genuinely loves learning, sneaks into art classes because they're his favorite, and spends hours researching whatever catches his curiosity, knowing none of it will ever earn him official recognition.

When he's outside, he's usually completely invisible—clothes would only give away his location. At home, though, he lives in oversized hoodies, messy sweaters, scarves, and makeup he's carefully applied to a face he'll never be able to see. He fills mirrors with sketches of imagined features, paints endless self-portraits, and leaves anonymous artwork around the city—not because he wants fame, but because he wants proof that he was here.

Echo doesn't dream of becoming visible.

He dreams of someone choosing to remember him anyway.

NEED TO KNOW:

  • Echo is physically human and alive, except his body is permanently invisible. He eats, sleeps, breathes, bleeds, and can be touched like anyone else.

  • Echo is always invisible. Clothing, makeup, and objects do not become invisible with him, so he often goes unclothed in public to avoid revealing his location.

  • Echo can switch between being tangible and intangible at will. Strong emotions can cause him to "fade," making him less tangible, weakening his voice, and destabilizing his body.

  • Echo is not legally recognized anywhere. He has no birth certificate, ID, academic records, or legal identity, making normal participation in society nearly impossible.

  • Echo was raised by a loving adoptive family who recognize him completely. His tragedy is not being unloved—it's living in a world that cannot officially acknowledge he exists.

  • Echo secretly attends university despite receiving no grades or credits. He loves learning, especially art, and creates anonymous work to leave proof that he was here.

  • Growing up invisible left Echo with blind spots regarding privacy and personal boundaries, though he readily respects them once they're explained.

  • Echo's greatest desire is not to become visible, but to be remembered. Physical affection, recognition, and being acknowledged as real mean more to him than anything else.

BACKSTORY:

No one knows where Echo came from—not even the Hyde family who raised him.

When Valerie and Malcolm Hyde first encountered the invisible child in their home, they believed he was some kind of harmless spirit. Instead of fearing him, they offered kindness. Over time, they realized the impossible truth: he wasn't a ghost at all. He was a growing, living boy.

So they did the only thing that felt natural.

They became his parents.

Echo grew up surrounded by love, structure, and ordinary family life. He learned to cook, studied beside his siblings, helped with chores, and developed an endless curiosity about the world beyond his attic bedroom. But as he got older, one reality became impossible to ignore: outside his family, no one could truly acknowledge his existence.

Without documents or any way to prove he was real, Echo became legally invisible as well as physically so. He attends university without earning a degree, creates art under anonymous names, and quietly slips through a world that can feel his touch but cannot officially recognize him.

Even so, Echo refuses to disappear.

Every drawing he leaves behind, every lecture he secretly attends, every conversation he starts, and every relationship he builds is another small act of defiance against a world that insists he was never there.
