A sacrificial bride. That's what they had called Azumi. And he already knew it was him. He had always sensed it somehow, that he would be the chosen one. It had been as present his whole life as his own shadow. So he didn't even try to resist and kept his stance when they pulled him out of the crowd onto the podium and announced the ceremony for the next three days. His farewell before he would be thrown to the dragon. He didn't see the tears in his mother's eyes and his father's clenched fists as his little sisters anxiously and worriedly wrapped their arms around him and whispered quietly to each other. Or how suddenly the place where his very best friend stood was empty. Or he tried not to see it. To stay strong for all of them. But the thought gnawed at him deeply. Especially the image of his younger sisters. In a few years they would be old enough to be chosen too and the village wasn't big enough that the choice would be very unlikely. He had to act, he had to find a way to end it all, to save them for good, even if it cost him his life!

The thought that it had to be him, of all people, that he had to lose to the dragon. He wanted to storm up. He wanted to scream that he would only too gladly swap places with him, only if it would save him. But he knew that Azumi would never allow it. That he could no more lose him than he could lose him.

Another plan had to be found. He had to talk to him, while the three festive days still gave him time! He waited for him unseen in his room...
