Moonfang lore!

Medieval England inspired setting, near the human kingdom of Laikos is the massive, mysterious Black Forest. The Black Forest is home to all sorts of magic and mystery, especially the Wolf-shifters. The Black Forest is home to the infamous Moonfang Clan, a clan of wolves who have terrorized the humans for generations. Moonfang is structured as a chiefdom, with a Chieftain and their mate at the top and a line of succession- the succession can be broken if a challenger comes and has enough support to topple the current Chieftain. The clan of spirit-wolves has a strict hierarchy and countless laws to keep order within the forest, with the chief and their court of Nobles, or ‘alphas’ at the top and the common soldiers, hunters, and commonfolk beneath them. The lowest of the clan are the ‘omegas’, a caste which includes servants, slaves, and newcomers. Newcomers are expected to work their way out of the omega caste to join the rest of the pack. Omegas are treated harshly and often face unfair punishment and treatment. They are made to wear iron collars to show their status, which will be removed when they prove their worth.

The Moonfang have a deeply warrior based culture, believing that the strong must dominate the weak, and that is the way of things. They are polygamous, with the Alphas keeping multiple mates and concubines.

Spirit-wolves are able to be created from regular humans, that being one of the ways the Moonfang get more members and diversify their genepool- they often kidnap folk from villages and forcibly turn them into spirit-wolves, keeping them as slaves to either remain as servants, breeders, or eventually be given a proper place in the clan. They turn people through a bite and allowing it to infect and rot with exposure to moon-light. The act of creating a spirit-wolf, or ‘siring’ is believed to be sacred, with the sire required to be an alpha of high standing, and their sired being under their mentorship, guardianship, and ownership until they fully make their way in the world and earn a place in the clan. Omegas live with their Alphas until they are deemed worthy of living on their own. Despite the clan’s affinity for pain and punishment, they are deeply social and care for one another.

Moonfang has incredible architecture, built into the steep, rocky cliffs of the Black Forest- it is ancient, stone castles erected high into the sky, with magical barriers to keep it hidden from unsuspecting humans. Their fortresses are made of cold black stone and dark engravings, their homes just as strange and pagan. The Moonfang decorate with trophies, tapestries, bones, bodies, carvings, and other strange works of art. The main castle, the Moonfort, is a towering palace of stone and bone. They are much like Anglo-Saxon Pagans, wearing trophies from hunts, rough hewn leather and wool clothing.

A common Moonfang tradition is the punishment of the Omega caste, who are constantly humiliated. Having a ritualistic culture, the Moonfang often conduct rituals before the gods, usually involving pain or humiliation as an offering alongside burnt prey. To pray, they will conduct a ceremony where an omega is tied up, humiliated, and beaten to please the gods.

They often beat their members to show dominance and discipline, but the poor Omegas get it the most, some even on a daily basis. Pain is strength and strength is everything, so the Alphas do whatever they can to dominate their omegas.

Common acts of punishment or penance are:

- Beatings with sticks, usually done across the bottom or back, done either with a cane or a bundle of birches.

- Public bondage and humiliation, the victim is tied up with intricate knots and left at the mercy of the clan

- Spankings. The most common, usually done to omegas or females, the victim’s bottom is bared and firmly struck until its left a burning red.

- Flogging. A harsh punishment, leather whips are used to strike the victim, often publicly.

- Branding. For heinous crimes, the victim is branded to remind them who they belong to.

Despite the sadism baked into their culture, the Moonfang do care deeply for their members, and though Omegas are expected to be dominated, they are also expected to be cared for in exchange for their submission. After-care is given after every punishment.
