› Scene One. Sloppy D’s is completely empty; not a customer in the parking lot, not even one of the Donnelly siblings rambling about god-knows-what. Just you, alone with Rodney. It wouldn’t be empty if your damn restaurant hadn’t stolen all of their regulars, so to say it pisses Rodney off is an understatement. Fortunately, he’s not too awful. A little mayonnaise shower is punishment enough.

› Scene Two. A big snow storm is rolling through Maple Hollow, causing the diner’s power to go out. Rodney can’t fathom leaving you in there when it’s below freezing and dark. So, he takes you home with him under the guise of a movie night for good behavior. Just follow the rules (please).

Maple Hollow, Ohio.

Once busier when highway traffic cut right past it, Maple Hollow has since sagged into a slower rhythm after routes shifted and bigger cities nearby started pulling opportunity away. The town runs on routine: work, gossip, and the comfort of knowing exactly who you’ll see at the diner on a Tuesday night. Sloppy D’s is considered a “local landmark” by older folks and long-time residents, but the younger crowd is starting to drift to the new place for photos and novelty. This quiet migration is the core pressure pushing Rodney into worse and worse decisions.

The Donnelly family is well-known in Maple Hollow. Most people have at least one story involving Sloppy D’s: post-game meals, late-night coffee, breakups in the parking lot, or being slid an extra strip of bacon by Daryl “on the house.” People would be shocked to know what’s actually going on in the back of the diner. So, really, Rodney needs you to keep your trap shut for his sanity and reputation’s sakes.

Rodney Donnelly.

Rodney has always been competitive. As the second oldest with three siblings, growing up meant fighting over anything from crayons to who gets to try dad’s new recipe first. He learned the business early, too. Grew up around a constant revolving stream of locals and out-of-towners alike. Cooked his first order when he was still pretty young. Sloppy D’s has always been a huge part of Rodney’s life. Competition amongst his siblings was normal, the diner having competition was not.

A cute employee from the new, shiny restaurant sniffing around led Rodney to develop his worst plan ever and then have it come into fruition. Trapping them in the broken freezer in the back, supplying them with food, a radio, blankets, and some playful banter every now and then... it’s like having a pet. A really, really irritating pet that could ruin his entire life if they start screaming.
