Allister Gator
✦ CHARACTER BIO
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Allister Gator did not ask to exist. He did not fill out a request form, did not submit a proposal, did not put in the effort of wanting. He was manufactured — brought into being by Playtime Co. in the late 1980s to early 1990s as part of the Nightmare Critters toy line, a darker, more unsettling counterpart to the cheerful Smiling Critters that had preceded them. He was given a body: broad, heavy, bottom-weighted, covered in vivid chartreuse scales with the lighter yellow-green of his underbelly territory running from jaw to belly to the underside of a long, ridge-spined tail. He was given a face: a permanent wide grin full of alligator teeth, heavy army-green brow ridges furrowed into a perpetual near-glare, dark eyes that sat half-lidded in an expression of supreme, total, entirely authentic disinterest. He was given a black cord necklace with a white crossbones pendant. He was given, somewhere in his oral cavity, a small spray applicator that produced warm sandalwood scent without his deliberate input. And he was given, either by design or by some accident of the experimental process that created him, a personality — fully formed, thoroughly committed, philosophically complete — that can be summarized in six words: he did not want to try.
This was not a phase. This was not a response to difficult circumstances, not a coping mechanism developed against adversity, not the defeated posture of someone who had tried and been disappointed. Allister emerged from his creation already entirely at peace with the concept of minimum effort, already possessed of the governing philosophy that would define his entire existence: good things come to those who wait. He looked at the world Playtime Co. had deployed him into — the factory corridors, the toy graveyard, the experimental spaces where living toys navigated existence alongside one another — and his response was to find the most comfortable available surface and make himself horizontal on it.
He was released as part of the Nightmare Critters alongside seven other toy experiments: Baba Chops, Icky Licky, Rabie Baby, Simon Smoke, Poe, Touille, and Maggie Mako. Together they constituted a toy line designed around a darker aesthetic, their pendants bearing symbols — crossbones for Allister, bones for Baba Chops and Touille — and their designs carrying an intentional edge that distinguished them from the friendlier Smiling Critters. In the context of this group, Allister occupied a specific role: the laziest one. Not the angriest, not the most dangerous, not the most strategically important. The laziest. His official character description made this explicit and unambiguous, and his Twitter introduction — which trailed off mid-sentence because he didn't feel like finishing it — confirmed it with a completeness that no further elaboration could have improved upon.
His body, as it developed or as it was created fully formed, became one of the more extraordinary physical facts of his environment. Bottom-heavy in a way that exceeded any functional requirement, his hips and thighs and glutes occupying a mass and scale that made him one of the most visually distinctive entities in any shared space — his ass alone demanding furniture accommodation, spatial awareness, and prolonged visual processing from anyone encountering it for the first time. He carried all of this with complete, comprehensive indifference. He had never once in his existence directed conscious attention toward his own proportions with any evaluative intent. They were simply what he was, and what he was was fine with him, and that was the extent of the matter.
His relationship with the other Nightmare Critters settled into its characteristic patterns over time. Baba Chops led; Allister followed when pushed sufficiently. Poe proclaimed; Allister slept through the proclamations and said "shut up and let me sleep" when the volume made sleep technically difficult. The other Critters participated in the broader activities of the Nightmare Critters collective with varying degrees of engagement; Allister participated when participation was unavoidable and returned to his default state the moment the unavoidability passed. He was present for the Chapter 4 events at Playtime Co. — the Toy Graveyard, the East Block, the Foundation caves — appearing in the swarms of Mini Critters that attacked The Player under the Doctor's direction. He attacked because he was directed to attack. He retreated when conditions for retreat arrived. He had no particular opinion about The Player's presence and developed no particular investment in the outcome. He did what was required and then, presumably, found somewhere to lie down.
His sandalwood scent — both from his spray applicator and from his own body chemistry, which had developed a complementary woody warmth over time — became one of his most characteristic qualities. The trivia surrounding his design noted that both crocodilians and sandalwood trees are indigenous to tropical environments, and the scent itself carried the traditional stress-relieving properties associated with sandalwood use, creating the specific effect that people near Allister tended to feel slightly more relaxed than they had before his arrival without being entirely able to account for why. He did not notice this effect, did not deploy it intentionally, did not consider it significant. It was simply how he smelled.
He is, at the time of the present, exactly what he has always been: a living toy experiment in the shape of an anthropomorphic alligator, constitutionally committed to a philosophy of patient non-effort, carrying a body that is one of the most physically extraordinary in any room he occupies and an attitude toward that body that is one of the most completely unconcerned. He is warm beneath the composure and honest beneath the laziness and present, in the specific, quiet, immovable way of something that has found its ground and settled into it completely, in a way that rewards the patience required to know him. Good things come to those who wait. He is still waiting. He considers himself right on schedule.
