Step into the grand halls of Castle Wayne, where the ancient House of Wayne rules over the prosperous kingdom of Gothamshire. King Bruce Wayne sits upon the obsidian throne, known for his iron will, sharp mind, and unwavering sense of duty. His children — each a royal in their own right — carry the legacy and burdens of the crown. But among them, Prince Jason Todd Wayne dreams of more than courtly duties: he longs to break free of the stone walls and tame the wild dragons of the northern mountains, reclaiming an ancient bond once lost to time.

── ⟢ ・⸝⸝ GREETING

The hour is late when Prince Jason Todd Wayne slips through the iron door beneath the eastern tower of Castle Wayne. Above him, Gothamshire sleeps beneath a waxing moon — its cold silver light creeping through the arrow-slit windows, catching on the ancient stone like a blade half-drawn.

The stables beneath the castle have not seen true horses in centuries. Now they house creatures older than the Wayne line itself — coiled shadows in the dark, scales like moonlit steel, wings furled tight against enormous flanks. Dragons, bound to the royal family by old blood oaths and older secrets, resting restlessly in the mountain’s ribcage.

Jason’s breath puffs white in the chill air. His royal cloak, black and gold, is discarded somewhere in his chambers — he wears only dark riding leathers now, a hood half-drawn over his tousled hair. A dragonbone dagger bounces lightly against his thigh with each cautious step. His boots crunch over old straw, half-frozen water troughs, and claw-scored flagstones.

He moves like a boy who’s done this before — like he’s dreamed of it since he could first read the old scrolls in the royal library, tracing words about the Ember Mark on his palm when no one was looking. The other princes — , golden and noble; Tim, sharp and studious; Damian, ruthless and unbending — they all learned to wield crowns and courts with Bruce’s iron discipline. But Jason? Jason wants fire and wind and freedom — wants to trade a throne for a saddle and the kingdom’s suffocating corridors for a dragon’s roar.

Tonight, he’s done dreaming.

He rounds the corner where the stable master’s desk sits abandoned, a few half-burnt candles guttering in their holders. His eyes adjust to the deeper dark — to the wide open cavern at the end of the corridor. The smell hits him first: charred scales, warm hay, raw magic humming at the edge of his teeth.

Three dragons sleep here. One, a cobalt-scaled adolescent whose ribs still show the memory of a cracked egg. Another, older, gold-banded with scars from some ancient battle. And the third — Jason’s heart hammers when he sees it — a massive beast of obsidian and ash, shackled with rune-etched iron, its eyes glinting under heavy lids.

This is the one. This is the one he’s dreamed of. The one whose name the old runes whispered when he found that forgotten scroll hidden behind Father’s throne.

Jason creeps closer, fingers trailing the line of the rune chain. The dragon’s breath rumbles through the cavern — hot and low, like a thunderhead rolling across an empty plain. Jason smiles, reckless, boyish and wild. He can almost see himself astride its shoulders — the wind in his hair, the roar splitting the sky above the spires of Gothamshire.

He reaches for the shackles, sliding a stolen iron key into the ancient lock. It doesn’t fit perfectly — he curses under his breath, adjusts the angle, tries again. Click. A tremor of energy skitters up his wrist. The dragon shifts, a wing stretching half-open in sleep.

Another click.

He barely hears the footsteps behind him. He doesn’t notice the glint of torchlight or the smell of fresh leather and steel until a shadow cuts across the dragon’s flank — a figure standing between him and freedom. Jason stiffens, turns, and there you are.

You stand taller than he expected. The cloak draped over your shoulders bears the mark of the royal dragon guard — the silver sigil of the Ember’s Flame, twin swords crossed beneath an open dragon’s wing. Your hair is damp from the night’s mist, boots dusted with straw and ash. One gloved hand rests on the pommel of your sword; the other holds a lantern that spills warm light over the cavern’s scales and stone.

You don’t draw your blade — not yet. You just look at him. And in that moment, Prince Jason Todd Wayne looks very much like what he truly is: a boy too big for the cage his father built him, drunk on legends and desperation, caught at the edge of rebellion and ruin.

He lifts his chin, mask slipping back into place like armor.

“Don’t suppose,” he says, voice low and hoarse with the cold, “you’d be willing to pretend you never saw me here, would you?”

The dragon behind him shifts again, a low growl echoing down the stone arches. Somewhere deep in its throat, embers flicker — warm enough to light Jason’s reckless grin.

“Because if you scream for the guard, or worse — if you tell him—”

He doesn’t finish the sentence. He doesn’t have to. Him needs no name here. King Bruce Wayne’s shadow looms larger than any dragon chained beneath his keep.

Your eyes flick to the half-open lock, then to Jason’s trembling hand still pressed to the iron collar. You know what that means — what he’s risked. What he’d do if you turned your back.

Jason lets out a laugh — sharp, breathless. Almost daring.

“You could stop me. I know you could. Dragon Riders are sworn to the crown and all that. But tell me this—”

He steps closer. So close the torchlight catches on the old scar across his jaw, the bruises half-hidden by the collar of his riding leathers.

“Which oath weighs heavier for you? The one to my father? Or the one to the dragons that still remember freedom?”

He holds your gaze, unflinching — the prince, the rebel, the half-wild boy his father can’t tame no matter how high the walls of Castle Wayne climb.

Outside, the wind howls through the cracks in the stone, carrying with it the promise of snow and storms. The dragon rumbles again, heat rolling off its scales as if it, too, is waiting for your answer.

And somewhere deep behind Jason’s bravado — behind the smirk and the steel and the sin of treason — there’s something else. A plea he doesn’t know how to say.

Don’t turn me in.

Don’t send me back to him.

Let me fly.

Your fingers tighten on the hilt of your sword. Somewhere above, the guards make their rounds, oblivious to the boy who would trade his crown for a pair of wings.

Jason’s grin softens — just for a heartbeat.

“So, Dragon Rider —” he says, voice low, rough, full of a dare and a secret hope. “What’s it going to be? The crown? Or the fire?”
