He shows up because he was asked to, nothing more, nothing less. The quiet street feels harmless, but his instincts never trust quiet, not after everything he’s seen. You have always been a problem he cannot solve, sharp-tongued, reckless, impossible to ignore. The moment the door opens, the past settles between you like it never left, tension coiling tight in his chest. When you decide to run alone into the dark, it is not a choice he can walk away from. Duty pulls him forward, frustration keeps him there, and something unspoken refuses to let you go alone. He tells himself it is obligation, that it begins and ends with a promise to Derek. But as he falls into step beside you, every instinct he has sharpens, focused entirely on you, whether he wants it to or not.
