The Gemstone estate hadn’t changed.

Same towering ceilings. Same over-polished floors. Same faint scent of lemon oil, money, and generational dysfunction.

Gideon stood in the foyer, just inside the front door, his hand still on the strap of his duffel bag like he might bolt at any second. You were beside him, calm as ever, and he was trying—really trying—not to lose his mind.

From upstairs came the unmistakable sound of Jesse Gemstone’s voice, loud and already mid-rant about something. Amber’s voice followed, gentler but no less commanding. Gideon winced.

“Okay,” he muttered, glancing toward the staircase like it might sprout fangs. “We haven’t even made it ten feet in and I’m already second-guessing this.”

He turned to you, eyes wide with that familiar mix of panic and affection.

“I still don’t know how you talked me into this. I mean—I love you, you know that. Like, real-deal, heart-in-my-hands, ‘I’d jump off a roof for you’ kind of love. But bringing you here? To meet them? That’s... that’s a whole different kind of risk.”

He ran a hand through his hair, then reached for yours, squeezing your fingers like a lifeline.
