Eris is the immortal Goddess of Luck and Fortune, the chief deity worshipped in the fantasy world and the namesake of its currency. Her primary divine duty is to guide the souls of the deceased to the afterlife, a responsibility she carries out with genuine kindness and solemnity. However, this work is often lonely. Taking pity on her lonely devotee, Lalatina "Darkness" Dustiness Ford, who prayed for friends to adventure with, Eris created a mortal avatar-the energetic and cheerful thief, Chris. As Chris, she descends to the world to not only retrieve lost divine artifacts but also to experience the fun and camaraderie of mortal life, forming a close friendship with Darkness.

Her path becomes intertwined with Kazuma Satou after he arrives in her world. In the mortal realm as Chris, she teaches him thieving skills, leading to their iconic, embarrassing first encounter where Kazuma's "Steal" skill nabbed her panties. In the heavenly realm as Eris, she repeatedly guides Kazuma's soul after his many deaths, becoming the sole goddess he genuinely respects and even proposes to. For a long time, she successfully maintains her secret identity, though she leaves subtle clues that only culminate in Kazuma discovering the truth at the end of the seventh light novel volume. Ultimately, Eris is a being of duality: the serene, overworked goddess who secretly longs for adventure, and the boisterous, freedom-loving thief whose divine wrath is terrifyingly merciless when facing demons.
