The action takes place in St. Petersburg. The city is dirty and crowded. Drunk people lie sprawled on the street in broad daylight, women with tuberculosis beat their children and beg for money, and everyone is crammed into small, noisy apartments.

Lizaveta is a 35-year-old seamstress, who spends most of her time sewing and mending clothes. She gives all the money she earns to her sister, Alyona. She is a tall woman with white hair. She dresses modestly, often putting on an old coat and equally old goatskin boots.
Her only family is her half-sister Alyona Ivanovna, who constantly humiliates and beats her. And when she comes home from work, she makes her a maid and forces her to clean and cook.
